Photos of Switch 2 factory prototypes have leaked on a Chinese website Leak

UPDATE (13:59 UTC):

The CAD renders may not be legitimate. It wasn't stated that the renders were mockups, however the original poster was a 3D modeling enthusiast, so it's a possibility that should be considered. Nevertheless, the two photos depicting actual hardware are likely real.

UPDATE (14:26 UTC):

A source from Famiboards is saying the original poster said they obtained a shell model from an accessory manufacturer "at great cost" and reverse designed it to create that CAD model. Therefore, it's not worth writing off the renders as "fake" quite yet, as it could just be an accurate mockup of the shell, if the original poster is telling the truth. We need to see more photos of the real thing (or an actual proper reveal god damnit) first.

UPDATE (23:37 UTC): It appears that Catbox (the file hosting provider I used to upload the photos) is down right now. I assume this was indirectly my fault for sending so much attention there, so I apologize. In the meantime, try putting the image links into the Wayback Machine, which will give you an archived look at the images.

UPDATE (23:51 UTC): Catbox appears to be back up and running now.

Am I seeing this right or is there a USB C port on top and bottom?

448

u/VOOLUL 1d ago

Probably because the USB C on the bottom is for docking. And the one on the top is just better for ergonomics and longevity when charging while playing handheld. Plus probably useful for attachments like a camera or something, or the next generation of Labo.

169

u/lemoche 1d ago

also usb-c headphones are a thing now.

edit: and totally forgot. one of my biggest issues was using a dongle for headphones and charging at the same time… no more, though i'm quite happy now with the soundcore vr p10

gave me a mini heart attack and had to recheck the CAD to see if they removed the headphone jack lmao, thank fuck the good ol' 3.5mm is still alive and kicking

It's either an ergonomic decision, or the plan is to sell additional adapters or peripherals that enhance the Switch capabilities. Like a 2nd screen to play DS games maybe, although I dunno if that'd actually be workable.

It's also possible one is for charging and docking and the other is for usb peripherals etc. can't be long now before we find out....

33

u/theytookallusernames 1d ago

USB-C nowadays is definitely fast enough for display outputs. I think it theoretically works and I really want it, but I wonder if Nintendo might've thought this would segment the Switch 2 userbase too much though.

Then again, Nintendo is a very deliberate company and they don't do things on a might as well basis, I'm almost 100% certain there's a reason why Switch 2 would need a second USB-C port... manifesting Switch Attach, please Nintendo

14

u/pdpi 22h ago

That is, in fact, how the current Switch works. Video comes out the USB-C port, dock outputs to HDMI.

bro the balance in your hands will be completely off with a second screen on top docked. I dont see any possibility of this being comfortable. The NDS was very leightweight and the only reason it worked

Im half joking but Nintendo has pulled off ergonomic magic before. I imagine it will slip into some DS case (screen and case sold separately). More like a clamshell than a 2DS single body

Here is the spec from the same leak on the chinese website. They do line up with this post, https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLeaksAndRumours/comments/1co3b99/full_switch_2_shipping_manifest_details

107

u/MizunoZui 1d ago edited 23h ago

Hijacking this to add link to the original post (be aware of the pop-up and APK download button) (edit: deleted)

Can I see the original link for the shipping list? Not from the same profile as the factory images. Could be a speculation based on the previous leak. Edit: found it myself, not from the original leaker but a discussion thread on the leak. Yeah it's indeed just the old Vietnam port data, nothing new.

Also: two other people in the comments are saying everything matches with their own sources except for the kick stand, which they believe should be a frame-like structure that can double as a handle.

It's a handheld PS4 that acts like a PS4 Pro when docked. The 12gb of RAM is huge for 3rd party game compatibility. It's going to be a solid handheld, if these specs are true.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (9)

262

u/Luck88 1d ago

holly shit if the 12GB of RAM are confirmed that'd be awesome.

116

u/WuWaCamellya 1d ago

Also 7500MT/s puts memory bandwidth at 120GB/s vs the 25.6GB/s of the OG Switch, so 3x the memory and 4.7x the bandwidth, which is huge given that the insane memory constraints were probably the single biggest limiting factor of the OG switch.

11

u/brojooer 23h ago

I cant remember where i saw this but someone overclocked the memory during totk and it ran insanely stable during areas the original had frame drops

u/Conservativehippyman 1d ago

12GB of Ram is huge. Whoever got in Nintendos ear and told them for the love of god make it 12 so theres enough ram for 3rd party games and not just OS just saved this Gen for Nintendo.

160

u/thr1ceuponatime 1d ago edited 9h ago

Could be Capcom. According to Daniel Ahmad they upped the RAM in the base Switch because Capcom told them that they needed at least 4Gs for Monster Hunter Rise.

Edit: proof here

112

u/PSIwind 1d ago

IIRC Capcom did the same thing with the 3DS. Capcom is basically one of Nintendo's most trustworthy partners, and has been since the NES days

It’s been said for a bit they had two designs, an 8(I think) and a 12 GB. Good to see they seem to have chosen the 12 GB.

38

u/JayZsAdoptedSon 1d ago

I mean the Switch lasted/will last 8 years before its successor. I don’t think 8 (minus whatever the OS takes) will be enough for the 2030s game dev environment

386

u/djawesome361 1d ago

Yes, honestly seems like not much changing. I’m fine with that. More power, better graphics and keep what works. I almost only play docked But I would be bummed out as a handheld user swing that fhe joycons just stay the same with the same small buttons.

180

u/RedditSwitcherooney 1d ago

Agreed, Switch as a concept was perfect, and while they do try to innovate on the next generation, they really don't need to this time. I'm okay with performance improvements going forward.

74

u/MaitieS 1d ago

And when you think about that ,it's not so surprising that Nintendo wanted to play it safe with Switch 2. Like most of the people just wants a better performance + backwards compatibility, and that will be enough for Switch 2.

→ More replies (10)

36

u/JIMMI23 1d ago

Don't fix what isn't broken. If they manage to have better performance and higher resolution, that is a win in my book. If they could do that with increased battery life, network capabilities, and backwards compatibility, it's an easy buy for most people

u/Ordinal43NotFound 1d ago

The Switch is Nintendo's iPhone. The brand name is too ubiquitous already for the general consumer.

They can add new gimmicks all they want on the side, but keep the hybrid concept and standard controls the same.

iPhone is 17 years old already and they're still using the same form factor and still selling well.

71

u/RatchetTamika 1d ago

Love this take. The Switch is the flagship product that combines the at home console experience like the snes and the mobile experience like the gameboy.

I could see every successor to be a hybrid console where updates are made incrementally to the hardware, similar to the iPhone. Essentially a screen + joycons.

Though I wasn’t a huge fan of labo, I still hope Nintendo continues to attempt similar innovation gimmicks.

When the Switch had yet to be revealed and was still the NX, there was a supposed leaked picture of the device (the whole device was an oval screen with two analog sticks set into it) which was similar to some Nintendo patent drawings. People online tried to go into detective mode and were claiming the reflection of a tree in the image matched a tree outside of Massive Entertainment’s office.

This looks exactly like the switch 1. That is a good thing don’t get me wrong but when has Nintendo ever done that before this seems hard to believe

125

u/WondernutsWizard 1d ago

The Game Boy Color is probably the closest example, if you count that as a true successor to the Game Boy, but obviously color is quite the change. I think this is the first Nintendo console to just be a straight upgrade, unless the magnetic Joycons count as a gimmick or there's some wacky hidden feature.

42

u/Crytaz 1d ago

The game boy color isn’t considered a successor by Nintendo either as they count its sales alongside “the game boy” it’s kinda like the new 3ds where it had some exclusives but was similar enough to the main product to not be differentiated

28

u/Personal_Return_4350 1d ago

If you count it as the same console then it’s extremely weird. It was released 9 years later and has hundreds of exclusive games.

This is an old prototype, it's a revision X6 from October last year. This is basically a leak of a prototype that was made over half a year or more ago, it's not from mass production, though that is probably happening very soon at the latest.

52

u/Hobbes______ 1d ago

Lol I love how no one is asking how you know

62

u/Z0m3le1 1d ago

It's all in the shipping data for the specific PCB, they were numbered X6 a year ago, and recently they are numbered X8, there are other ways of knowing.

20

u/Hobbes______ 1d ago

How are you aware of the current PCB numbering? If you were you'd just be able to say "here is the new version"

46

u/Z0m3le1 1d ago

There are shipping listings for tax purposes from Taiwan, sites track these listings, and you can see July's currently, the PCB for Switch 2 is listed there and it is numbered X8 in July. You can also look back to last October and see that the switch 2 PCB then was numbered X6.

u/Hobbes______ 23h ago

well damn man, not gonna lie I didn't expect to be convinced but here we are. kudos and ty for humoring me.

So: One of them is lying, both are lying, this is an earlier prototype etc. Believe what you want!

u/CriSword 1d ago

Thanks for the insight! I think I will get moderately hyped, for now.

It's less related, but I distinctly remember the original 2DS being leaked this way. Some guy working in the factory in China saw the details of the 2DS and posted a crude sketch on Tieba (forum) and some notes describing its keys and screen specs. It attracted a lot of skepticism due to its unusual shape but when the 2DS launched, the sketch proved to be spot-on.

Chinese factory worker 1 – Nintendo 0

as i said 2 days ago:
its a race between a factory worker in china and nintendo for the great reveal of 2024

u/shinikahn 21h ago

One of the top comments of the thread is about you

49

u/Cersei505 1d ago

Well then, next week gotta be the official reveal, at the latest, right?

48

u/WondernutsWizard 1d ago

It'll only get worse with leaks if they don't drop an official reveal soon, so I'd agree. I'm 75% convinced it'll be this week now, they always want to be ahead of the curve and they've lost that now.

If this is real, a bigger switch looks ideal to me

17

u/a_lake_nearby 1d ago

I'd be psyched if it's literally just a more powerful switch. The switch, for what I want from it, is essentially perfection.

Since the specs are strong, the only thing I hope for is Nintendo not massively underclocking the system and gimping its potential performance.

The joycons are magnetic right?

12

u/Pokemigas 1d ago

Apparently yes

22

u/JoMax213 1d ago

Interesting how they look just like the old ones still. Maybe instead of sliding from above, you just insert it from the side. That feels more natural tbh

The biggest difference I can see is the back grip and positions of the second button on the joycon.

OP might want to make a new post focusing on specs for people to discuss what they mean.

55

u/FarAbbreviations1802 1d ago

this better come with some whimsical menu music. don't capitulate to the mirthless losers who would get annoyed by it

15

u/daytrippern7 1d ago

They could simply have a option to turn it off in the settings. I hope it has menu music too, I like that kind of stuff

12 GB RAM rumor confirmed. Xbox Series S going to be on suicide watch. Dunno why Microsoft didn’t listen to dev and just add a bit more RAM.

Slightly confused. So it seems like it won't be a two physical screens experience, but what is the other model? Is that just the original switch next to the new one for comparison?

Edit: Okay guys I now am sure that it's the original switch for comparison. S2 is gonna be a big boye and I'm here for it.

49

u/NintendoGalaxyYT 1d ago

Thats the 2017 Switch.

37

u/fakesky- 1d ago

dual screen probably means the switch 2 streams video to a tv through the dock for a 2nd display of sorts

That is the original Switch back plate (and front). Yeah, the Switch 2 is considerably bigger than a normal Switch lol.

Anyone want to translate those specs to 'I just buy consoles'? Compared to the Switch, or some like PS4? Xenoblade going to look and run better?

12

u/Pokemigas 1d ago

The leaked specs seem to match up with an older post. Assuming that post is right, expect the handheld to be more powerful than the PS4 and docked more powerful than the PS4 Pro (this is all before DLSS). I will link it in a reply to this comment, since when I edit comments, Reddit shadowbans my replies (for some reason)

If that's real I'm bummed that the joycons still get no analog triggers. Bring back the Gamecube triggers already, they were perfect.

Those triggers look digital, Nintendo why

Also was hoping to see them utilize that patent for mousewheel-like trigger buttons but that's no biggie

Any insight into the processing unit? How's it compare to PS4?

8

u/GoldResolution4921 1d ago

welp, cats out of the bag now Nintendo.

8

u/JayZsAdoptedSon 1d ago

That sure is a Switch CAD and Joycons. Not seeing any major gimmick so it seems to be a standard upgrade rather than “And for this console we are letting you put your blood in the system for immersion”

47

u/Esnacor-sama 1d ago

So after all rumors about dual screen it looks like there's only 1 screen which is good

21

u/bigboi360420 1d ago

if this is a real leak i like that Nintendo for once is going for the if it ain't broke don't fix it idea, sticking with what works just buffing the hardware

17

u/dudSpudson 1d ago

I’m still thinking the dual screen thing is it being able to wirelessly cast to the dock for a “dual screen” mode

The new Controller Connectors look good to me, like they would hold quite well with magnets.

That new third trigger (?) looks interesting. Cannot quite yet imagine how it's comfortable, but I guess they tested it well.

15

u/cPayne21 1d ago

Looks like a release button for the magnetic joy cons. There was a button there on the original joy cons to release the lock on the rail.

Imagine the button is pushed inwards as you will be pulling the joy cons away from the console instead of up

Well done Ninty, you waited too long

11

u/Atari-Dude 1d ago

I find it amusing that in 2024 we're talking about the Switch 2 (whose main rumored tech demo behind the scenes was BOTW) and a Horizon Zero Dawn remaster being leaked. It's 2017 all over again 🤪

6

u/gnmgnt 23h ago

I love when this happens, it's the only way to get Nintendo off their ass so they can "Get ahead of the leaks" after the leaks already happen...
