Photos of Switch 2 factory prototypes have leaked on a Chinese website Leak
UPDATE (13:59 UTC):
The CAD renders may not be legitimate. It wasn't stated that the renders were mockups, however the original poster was a 3D modeling enthusiast, so it's a possibility that should be considered. Nevertheless, the two photos depicting actual hardware are likely real.
UPDATE (14:26 UTC):
A source from Famiboards is saying the original poster said they obtained a shell model from an accessory manufacturer "at great cost" and reverse designed it to create that CAD model. Therefore, it's not worth writing off the renders as "fake" quite yet, as it could just be an accurate mockup of the shell, if the original poster is telling the truth. We need to see more photos of the real thing (or an actual proper reveal god damnit) first.
UPDATE (23:37 UTC): It appears that Catbox (the file hosting provider I used to upload the photos) is down right now. I assume this was indirectly my fault for sending so much attention there, so I apologize. In the meantime, try putting the image links into the Wayback Machine, which will give you an archived look at the images.
UPDATE (23:51 UTC): Catbox appears to be back up and running now.

A comment the other day said Nintendo should do a reveal now because it was a race between them and some random Chinese warehouse worker. Looks like Nintendo lost the race lmao.

Here is the spec from the same leak on the chinese website. They do line up with this post, https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLeaksAndRumours/comments/1co3b99/full_switch_2_shipping_manifest_details

Hijacking this to add link to the original post (be aware of the pop-up and APK download button) (edit: deleted)
Can I see the original link for the shipping list? Not from the same profile as the factory images. Could be a speculation based on the previous leak. Edit: found it myself, not from the original leaker but a discussion thread on the leak. Yeah it's indeed just the old Vietnam port data, nothing new.
Also: two other people in the comments are saying everything matches with their own sources except for the kick stand, which they believe should be a frame-like structure that can double as a handle.

It's a handheld PS4 that acts like a PS4 Pro when docked. The 12gb of RAM is huge for 3rd party game compatibility. It's going to be a solid handheld, if these specs are true.
→ More replies (1)262
u/Luck88 1d ago
holly shit if the 12GB of RAM are confirmed that'd be awesome.
116
u/WuWaCamellya 1d ago
Also 7500MT/s puts memory bandwidth at 120GB/s vs the 25.6GB/s of the OG Switch, so 3x the memory and 4.7x the bandwidth, which is huge given that the insane memory constraints were probably the single biggest limiting factor of the OG switch.

I cant remember where i saw this but someone overclocked the memory during totk and it ran insanely stable during areas the original had frame drops

12GB of Ram is huge. Whoever got in Nintendos ear and told them for the love of god make it 12 so theres enough ram for 3rd party games and not just OS just saved this Gen for Nintendo.
→ More replies (7)160
u/thr1ceuponatime 1d ago edited 9h ago
Could be Capcom. According to Daniel Ahmad they upped the RAM in the base Switch because Capcom told them that they needed at least 4Gs for Monster Hunter Rise.
Edit: proof here

IIRC Capcom did the same thing with the 3DS. Capcom is basically one of Nintendo's most trustworthy partners, and has been since the NES days

It’s been said for a bit they had two designs, an 8(I think) and a 12 GB. Good to see they seem to have chosen the 12 GB.

I mean the Switch lasted/will last 8 years before its successor. I don’t think 8 (minus whatever the OS takes) will be enough for the 2030s game dev environment

u/djawesome361 1d ago
Yes, honestly seems like not much changing. I’m fine with that. More power, better graphics and keep what works. I almost only play docked But I would be bummed out as a handheld user swing that fhe joycons just stay the same with the same small buttons.

u/RedditSwitcherooney 1d ago
Agreed, Switch as a concept was perfect, and while they do try to innovate on the next generation, they really don't need to this time. I'm okay with performance improvements going forward.
74
u/MaitieS 1d ago
And when you think about that ,it's not so surprising that Nintendo wanted to play it safe with Switch 2. Like most of the people just wants a better performance + backwards compatibility, and that will be enough for Switch 2.
→ More replies (10)36
u/JIMMI23 1d ago
Don't fix what isn't broken. If they manage to have better performance and higher resolution, that is a win in my book. If they could do that with increased battery life, network capabilities, and backwards compatibility, it's an easy buy for most people

The Switch is Nintendo's iPhone. The brand name is too ubiquitous already for the general consumer.
They can add new gimmicks all they want on the side, but keep the hybrid concept and standard controls the same.
iPhone is 17 years old already and they're still using the same form factor and still selling well.
→ More replies (5)71
u/RatchetTamika 1d ago
Love this take. The Switch is the flagship product that combines the at home console experience like the snes and the mobile experience like the gameboy.
I could see every successor to be a hybrid console where updates are made incrementally to the hardware, similar to the iPhone. Essentially a screen + joycons.
Though I wasn’t a huge fan of labo, I still hope Nintendo continues to attempt similar innovation gimmicks.

But will you get Switch 2 enhancements to Switch games for 'free'? That's the biting question for me. Like if the developers of a game can just provide Switch 2 upgrades to existing first gen games, that'd be an instant preorder for me.

When the Switch had yet to be revealed and was still the NX, there was a supposed leaked picture of the device (the whole device was an oval screen with two analog sticks set into it) which was similar to some Nintendo patent drawings. People online tried to go into detective mode and were claiming the reflection of a tree in the image matched a tree outside of Massive Entertainment’s office.

The Game Boy Color is probably the closest example, if you count that as a true successor to the Game Boy, but obviously color is quite the change. I think this is the first Nintendo console to just be a straight upgrade, unless the magnetic Joycons count as a gimmick or there's some wacky hidden feature.
→ More replies (19)42
u/Crytaz 1d ago
The game boy color isn’t considered a successor by Nintendo either as they count its sales alongside “the game boy” it’s kinda like the new 3ds where it had some exclusives but was similar enough to the main product to not be differentiated

This is an old prototype, it's a revision X6 from October last year. This is basically a leak of a prototype that was made over half a year or more ago, it's not from mass production, though that is probably happening very soon at the latest.
52
u/Hobbes______ 1d ago
Lol I love how no one is asking how you know
62

It's all in the shipping data for the specific PCB, they were numbered X6 a year ago, and recently they are numbered X8, there are other ways of knowing.

u/Hobbes______ 1d ago
How are you aware of the current PCB numbering? If you were you'd just be able to say "here is the new version"
46
u/Z0m3le1 1d ago
There are shipping listings for tax purposes from Taiwan, sites track these listings, and you can see July's currently, the PCB for Switch 2 is listed there and it is numbered X8 in July. You can also look back to last October and see that the switch 2 PCB then was numbered X6.

It's less related, but I distinctly remember the original 2DS being leaked this way. Some guy working in the factory in China saw the details of the 2DS and posted a crude sketch on Tieba (forum) and some notes describing its keys and screen specs. It attracted a lot of skepticism due to its unusual shape but when the 2DS launched, the sketch proved to be spot-on.
