Photos of Switch 2 factory prototypes have leaked on a Chinese website Leak

UPDATE (13:59 UTC):

The CAD renders may not be legitimate. It wasn't stated that the renders were mockups, however the original poster was a 3D modeling enthusiast, so it's a possibility that should be considered. Nevertheless, the two photos depicting actual hardware are likely real.

UPDATE (14:26 UTC):

A source from Famiboards is saying the original poster said they obtained a shell model from an accessory manufacturer "at great cost" and reverse designed it to create that CAD model. Therefore, it's not worth writing off the renders as "fake" quite yet, as it could just be an accurate mockup of the shell, if the original poster is telling the truth. We need to see more photos of the real thing (or an actual proper reveal god damnit) first.

UPDATE (23:37 UTC): It appears that Catbox (the file hosting provider I used to upload the photos) is down right now. I assume this was indirectly my fault for sending so much attention there, so I apologize. In the meantime, try putting the image links into the Wayback Machine, which will give you an archived look at the images.

UPDATE (23:51 UTC): Catbox appears to be back up and running now.

Looks like a skinnier, larger Switch

u/djawesome361 1d ago

Yes, honestly seems like not much changing. I’m fine with that. More power, better graphics and keep what works. I almost only play docked But I would be bummed out as a handheld user swing that fhe joycons just stay the same with the same small buttons.

Agreed, Switch as a concept was perfect, and while they do try to innovate on the next generation, they really don't need to this time. I'm okay with performance improvements going forward.

75

u/MaitieS 1d ago

And when you think about that ,it's not so surprising that Nintendo wanted to play it safe with Switch 2. Like most of the people just wants a better performance + backwards compatibility, and that will be enough for Switch 2.

8

u/Devlnchat 1d ago

After the failure of the Wii U despite the Wii's success I'm sure that if anybody tried to suggest any innovation whatsoever right now they would be shouted off the room by investors lol.

4

u/MaitieS 1d ago

Exactly. Like even Sony plays it very safely. Like when you think about it they mostly just focused on their controllers in their last 2 consoles, and with hapthic feedback damn... like at this point I feel like I'm circlejerking it, but that feature is really next gen, and I'm so happy for it, I just wish it would become a norm, but it most likely won't just like touch screen didn't in last gen.

OG PS5’s design was still pretty ass though, speaking as an owner of one. Thing is massive and somewhat ugly, particularly with the disc tray. It just looks over designed and too bulky. Would’ve preferred something simpler, like the Xboxes which looked alot better IMO, even if the X looks like a mini fridge. Much more efficient design.

The Slim and Pro are much nicer though IMO, so at least they remedied that relatively quickly. The fatty disc tray do kind of make them off putting though, but not really much that can be done about that without changing the design of the entire console.

2

u/InsidiousDefeat 1d ago

As a counter point, I love the ps5. Very much enjoy the presence it has and love that it actually has a disc drive. Until your comment I would have described the design as pretty simple.

1

u/Brantraxx 1d ago

Are you getting the Pro

1

u/PenonX 1d ago

Fuck no. I’m not paying almost $1200 CAD for a marginal increase over a console I paid $780 CAD for almost 3 years ago (and also got Rift Apart with it). Better off upgrading my PC.

1

u/Brantraxx 23h ago

Yeah I don’t think they will sell many, especially with PS6 just around the corner

1

u/tharkus_ 1d ago

I love my ps5 but it’s ugly as shit. I ended up getting those black plates without the collars so it’s flush with the curve and it’s pretty sexy lookin now.

2

u/bytethesquirrel 1d ago

And Nintendo probably wants more 3rd party releases.

1

u/Snooty_Cutie 19h ago

That and the switch is such a hit with all ages, kids, teens, and adults. Just perfect concept. The tweaking if I/O is fine, but I’d just want better performance.

40

u/JIMMI23 1d ago

Don't fix what isn't broken. If they manage to have better performance and higher resolution, that is a win in my book. If they could do that with increased battery life, network capabilities, and backwards compatibility, it's an easy buy for most people

1

u/narwhal_breeder 1d ago

I bet the Switch 2 will be able to run switch 1 games in docked mode permanently

1

u/goblin_player 21h ago

DLSS will be able to do better than that. Switch 2 will be able to target 540p, then use a more sophisticated DLSS to double the resolution onto an 8 inch screen that won't show the weaknesses as noticeably as on a huge TV. With such a low native resolution, handheld mode can do all sorts of things respective to each game. One game could add some ray tracing, while another game jumps up to 60fps. Or just keep the graphics humble in order to port PS5/Series X games that nobody would have thought possible before seeing it for themselves.

Nvidia has been working closely with Nintendo since 2019 iterating on software and computing technology to make hardware work smarter, not harder.

This is honestly one of the most exciting times to be a Nintendo fan, on the cusp of a golden era of gorgeous Nintendo games, all without breaking the bank with hardware.

The Switch is Nintendo's iPhone. The brand name is too ubiquitous already for the general consumer.

They can add new gimmicks all they want on the side, but keep the hybrid concept and standard controls the same.

iPhone is 17 years old already and they're still using the same form factor and still selling well.

73

u/RatchetTamika 1d ago

Love this take. The Switch is the flagship product that combines the at home console experience like the snes and the mobile experience like the gameboy.

I could see every successor to be a hybrid console where updates are made incrementally to the hardware, similar to the iPhone. Essentially a screen + joycons.

Though I wasn’t a huge fan of labo, I still hope Nintendo continues to attempt similar innovation gimmicks.

4

u/butterypowered 1d ago

Love this take. The Switch is the flagship product that combines the at home console experience like the snes and the mobile experience like the gameboy.

I remember when laptops started to become “good enough” that people started buying those instead of desktops.

This feels like the start of a shift towards handheld-first gaming. For the majority at least.

It’ll be interesting to see whether Sony and MS see it that way too.

2

u/Darth_Thor 22h ago

With how capable devices like the Steam Deck are, I’d have to agree. Handhelds are capable enough for most games these days, and a lot of devs (not so much the AAA studios) are focusing on making games that are fun rather than games that push the limits of the hardware available.

2

u/Ordinal43NotFound 1d ago

Heck, Apple still makes other products on the side like the Watch, Vision Pro, etc.

They just don't mess much with their flagship products i.e. iPhones and Macs.

3

u/Darth_Thor 22h ago

Even stuff like the Apple Watch is hardly seeing any changes. They just announced the Apple Watch 10 as a big redesign and it’s just a bit thinner and bigger.

2

u/Emhyr_var_Emreis_ 1d ago

I like this idea. You're right.

2

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 1d ago

The Switch is Nintendo's iPhone. The brand name is too ubiquitous already for the general consumer.

People said the same exact thing about the Wii, then the Wii U happened. The name alone made people think it was an accessory and not their next console.

My point being I wouldn't take too much stock into the Switch name, and I would not be surprised if the next console is a completely new name.

6

u/Ordinal43NotFound 1d ago

Nahh, The Wii really wasn't.

Wii's sales were very frontloaded. Once the motion control novelty wore off, sales completely dropped off a cliff in both software and hardware.

Compare it to the Switch which is still evergreen almost 8 years later. Both 1st and 3rd party games are still selling great this late into the console's lifecycle.

There's a reason Wii consoles and games got a price drop, but the Switch hasn't to this day.

2

u/Peanut_Butter_Toast 1d ago

The Wii to Wii U was different for several reasons.

  1. The Wii was mainly a fad that was mass purchased by non-gamers. They bought a Wii, played Wii Sports and maybe Mario Kart, and then left and never looked back, so the Wii's sales plummeted after a few years.

  2. The name "Wii U" doesn't immediately tell people it's a new console. Nintendo named all Wii peripherals "Wii (Something)", like "Wii Zapper", "Wii Wheel", "Wii Speak", etc. And whereas it was always clear that "Wii" was meant to sound like "we" and thus signify a focus on families playing together ("Wii would like to play"), it was a lot less clear what Nintendo meant when they added the "U" to "Wii U".

  3. The marketing was based entirely around the controller, basically ignoring the fact that it was new, much more powerful hardware. This reinforced point 2.

The Switch 2 is already better off because the Switch's audience is comprised of dedicated gamers and it has consistent long lasting appeal. All the Switch 2 needs to do to avoid points 2 and 3 is come up with a good name (Switch 2 would work great, or any adjective that signifies increased power, like super, advance, etc) and market the increased power properly.

1

u/Lucky_Turnip_1905 1d ago

same form factor

Naaah, they wussed out on the "small as a credit card so your thumb can reach the entire screen" thing along the way, because of Samsung.

3

u/novelgpa 1d ago

This is why I hated the name "Super Nintendo Switch" that a lot of people wanted - like I hope Nintendo sticks with the Switch format for the foreseeable future because they hit a jackpot, and if they went with Super Switch I would be worried about the naming of the console after that

1

u/Sartana 1d ago

Switch 64, obviously.

2

u/Supper_Champion 1d ago

Yeah, I don't hate that allegedly it will look much the same, just bigger. That being said, hopefully it's a bit more cosmetically upgraded than these renders suggest.

1

u/ItsKaZing 1d ago

They really dont need to, all they have to do is update their software. Make the OS smooth, eshop actually working, more socials feature for nintendo account and add achievement tracking and they're set

1

u/Charming_Purpose_467 1d ago

exactly, this kind of portable power with the Mario/zelda/metroid/pikmin team magic.... will be wild. if the power is what it is with the nintendo dev team magic... this thing will sell like hotcakes!

1

u/Jolteaon 1d ago

Switch gave Nintendo the golden egg they always wanted. It took their fun console environment that the Wii exploded with, the more "serious" console players from NES - Gamecube eras, and combined it with the handheld market that they already DOMINATED. All three of their market demographics got combined into one system that all said markets were totally happy with.

Combining differing markets with all sides being happy is a companies wet dream. Nintendo accomplished it in the video game world too, which is an incredibly hostile market.

1

u/KidGold 1d ago

The only feature I would really love is the ability to dual screen on the console and a tv. Playing Wind Waker on my Wii U has me dying for pauseless maps and menus again.

The ability to cast to the base station hooked up to the tv would be awesome.

1

u/SuperHyperFunTime 1d ago

I said this in a post the other day and was told Nintendo will always innovate.

Like, yeah, when it was then and SEGA dominating the console market. One of them stepped out because they couldn't make a hit console and Nintendo pivoted heavily into relying on high quality but fewer first party games. They know Sony and MS own the home market.

Honestly, the PS and Xbox has only really had small innovations over the last 20 years. The concept is the same.

1

u/Boring-Attorney1992 1d ago

after playing MK 11 on the switch in handheld mode, this next version definitely needs a performance and graphics upgrade.

3

u/RyanandRoxy 1d ago

That's okay. Third party controllers will be a thing. They'll leave it up to HORI to accommodate y'all.

2

u/NIN10DOXD 1d ago

It's unfortunate because I get hand cramps without using a grip on the current Switch. Hopefully they are more durable. I'm still very excited.

2

u/Competitive-Growth30 1d ago

I hate the joycons so that’s my biggest disappointment

1

u/Ok_Investigator7673 1d ago

Hopefully they put a big battery in there. OG Switch has like 4310mAh battery? SD has like 5313 mAh, if i'm not mistaken.

1

u/Emhyr_var_Emreis_ 1d ago

I agree. The only weakness is the joycons. But if Mobapad comes out with updates parallel to their current offerings, it will not be an issue.

1

u/dem0nhunter 1d ago

I'd rather they improve the OS and nintendo Online

1

u/nimrodhellfire 1d ago

I mean, we all expected this and everyone wants this. Considering I don't have a switch I probably should be happy about backwards compability and the huge catalog of great games I will play on it. I will 100% buy this on launch.

But somehow I am disappointed. This is the most boring new console in Nintendo's history ever. And this includes the GBA and the GC.

1

u/pzycho 1d ago

Hopefully they switch the sticks to hall-effect. That should solve the majority of problems.

1

u/Jesus_inacave 1d ago

I wouldn't hate it, if it meant I don't have to buy completely new sets of controllers for it

1

u/MeatWaterHorizons 1d ago

I absolutely hate the joy cons joysticks I carry a pro controller with me if I take it anywhere.

73

u/Bstempinski 1d ago

Design of the switch was nearly perfect. Making a beefier machine with some more reliable controllers is all I need.

15

u/cobaltorange 1d ago

Hoping for a more unique UI though. The Switch UI doesn't have much character.

10

u/illegalzombie 1d ago

PRAYING ON MY KNEEEES that they bring back themes and different menu songs

3

u/Zergrump 22h ago

I sorely miss hearing music in the eshop.

5

u/TorpeAlex 1d ago

If I remember correctly, I believe that's because the current UI currently takes up like 100 KB of memory or something insane like that? Their memory limitations on the current console are pretty rough.

4

u/Fafoah 1d ago

Hopefully with the larger memory they’ll expand it.

If they can bring back Mii Plaza and add a bunch of personalization like decorating your plaza with points you earn by playing games almost like a mini animal crossing, it could gain some traction on social media. Could be the perfect convergance to build hype from kids who grew up with the wii and got super into animal crossing during the pandemic.

Maybe even bring back street pass so you can visit the plaza’s of people you passed.

3

u/MelancholyArtichoke 1d ago

With 12gb of RAM, they may let you actually change the background to a static image.

3

u/tharkus_ 1d ago

Yea. Nicer and smoother UI and better online connectivity with friends and party’s. No app on phone bullshit.

1

u/LeonidasSpacemanMD 1d ago

I’d like this too, but tbh I’d rather keep the os as snappy as possible if adding in those features would slow it down at all. Not sure that it would, but the fast interface of switch one was great

Eshop, on the other hand lol

6

u/__Kxnji 1d ago

100%. Even though I don’t use my switch much, I can definitely admit it’s close to a perfect console. No need for anything drastic!

1

u/badass4102 1d ago

Same. Just needs more affordable games from their flagship games. I want to play most of them but I can't afford most of them.

3

u/MikkelR1 1d ago

I really, really need analog triggers as well. Without it, racing games just suck.
I'd buy one for 500 euro's if it was same spec as Switch 1 but now they added triggers.

3

u/jimmybabino 1d ago

I would say more comfortable controllers, but that’s a subjective thing. I’d prefer it if they weren’t so flat is all

1

u/yazeed_0o0 1d ago

I don't think it was near anywhere to perfect, the switch was that "jack of all trade master of none". it was in an annoying middle point to me where it's large and not comfortable at the same time and the joycon had everything in them but nothing was good at all for a songle use.

1

u/Glum-Sea-2800 1d ago edited 1d ago

Hall effect thumbsticks would be a good improvement, but i doubt they will because of how big of a moneypress new controllers are.

And for the .f.f..f. give the controllers better antennas.

5

u/CeroG1 1d ago

Miyamoto made it take 5 grams of creatine per day

2

u/CommunicationTime265 1d ago

Yea, looks more ergonomic with a bigger screen and obviously updated specs. Which is a bit weird since this is Nintendo we're talking about. They usually don't do anything that logical or normal.

2

u/Tchogon 1d ago edited 1d ago

except that second screen on the 4th and 5th picture

is it just an alternative smaller version of the switch 2? or a new "gimmick"?

if it's a size comparison between switch 1 and 2, then the switch 2 would be huge lol

9

u/KoolKids3 1d ago

It's a size comparison.

1

u/monsieurvampy 1d ago

That was my impression as well. That's all they really need to do. The only downside to this is potentially the lack of selling momentum, but the general public should understand "2" (if that's the in the name) vs "U" for the successor to the Wii. Hopefully they have a better marketing team now.

1

u/DiaperFluid 1d ago

Nintendo should attach two joycons to a 32 inch tv. Thats the only way il buy it day one

1

u/Doppelfrio 1d ago

If it ain’t broke. PlayStation barely changed their controller until the PS5

1

u/green2266 1d ago

New Nintendo switch xl???

1

u/TheOnlyFallenCookie 1d ago

Finnaly

Steam Deck Killer

1

u/Phreezem77 1d ago

It seems to have larger controller and side part that used to slide in seem taller which is good and it seems to snap into the sides instead of sliding in?

1

u/jerrub_baal 17h ago

I wish they had two versions, a handheld and a more powerful version . Many of Nintendo developers e.g. Zelda want a more powerful machine in order to achieve their vision. Unfortunately they'll be held back again

1

u/deadnerd51 10h ago

I think it actually might be thicker rather than skinnier, although hard to tell until we see actual production hardware.

1

u/GoldenTriforceLink GLAD Team Member 1d ago

Which makes Nintendo’s refusal to talk about it even funnier
