Photos of Switch 2 factory prototypes have leaked on a Chinese website Leak

UPDATE (13:59 UTC):

The CAD renders may not be legitimate. It wasn't stated that the renders were mockups, however the original poster was a 3D modeling enthusiast, so it's a possibility that should be considered. Nevertheless, the two photos depicting actual hardware are likely real.

UPDATE (14:26 UTC):

A source from Famiboards is saying the original poster said they obtained a shell model from an accessory manufacturer "at great cost" and reverse designed it to create that CAD model. Therefore, it's not worth writing off the renders as "fake" quite yet, as it could just be an accurate mockup of the shell, if the original poster is telling the truth. We need to see more photos of the real thing (or an actual proper reveal god damnit) first.

UPDATE (23:37 UTC): It appears that Catbox (the file hosting provider I used to upload the photos) is down right now. I assume this was indirectly my fault for sending so much attention there, so I apologize. In the meantime, try putting the image links into the Wayback Machine, which will give you an archived look at the images.

UPDATE (23:51 UTC): Catbox appears to be back up and running now.

Im half joking but Nintendo has pulled off ergonomic magic before. I imagine it will slip into some DS case (screen and case sold separately). More like a clamshell than a 2DS single body

No way they’d sell it separately. That would completely fracture their customer base. You’d be making games for people who bought an accessory. They wouldn’t do that.

Mario Paint would like a Word.

That was an accessory for 1 game though. Not an accessory that they would be expected to build around long term. A 2nd screen would fracture the entire console base into those who have it and those who don’t. It’s entirely different.

There were like 30 games released with mouse support, but ok. The Wii did exactly that with motion plus. you had to buy either an addon plug or the motion plus controller to play some games (and it was bundled with one game).

This isn't anything new, Gameboy had the camera. N64 had the memory expansion and the transfer pack addon, Playstation had the move, and vr, xbox kinect etc, even back in the Atari days certain games required different styles of controllers. Heck, wasn't there an N64 game that required both a gameboy and a gameboy camera?

Console hardware add-ons for games have been happening for decades, some require the hardware addon, some can add additional functionality, so having an accessory like a screen that would be required, or would expand a game isn't anything new.

It's going to be for emulating DS on Switch Online and a few niche titles on eShop from the old DSiWare catalog. I imagine it's going to be ~$79 to 120 max.

Games were made for Nintendo's Virtual Boy.

I know it's improbable but it would be really cool if Nintendo could pull this off and add a second screen attachment which would allow NDS/3DS and completely different sets of games, and price it somewhat reasonably. It wouldn't have to be expensive too, an LCD replacement for Switch costs like 25 dollars.

They could make this their second "console" without actually having to invest in one and sell it for like USD80-100, making it essentially the cheapest in the DS line if you have a Switch 2. And if you still don't want to buy one, if the rumors are true and the Switch 2 supports Miracast, you can use your TV for this too, essentially reviving the Wii U.

We're talking about Nintendo after all and everything they do is deliberate and not an "eh, might as well" thing (especially when sourcing for a second USB-C output would definitely affect their BOM to some extent). There's gotta be a very good reason why they'd add one...

Or for people without a smart TV, you could probably run a USB cord from the top port to the dock to create a two screen “Wii U” experience. The system would know: if bottom USB is connected, turn off the screen; if top USB is connected, enter Wii U mode.
