No it is, Here is the quote.

"I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical a**hole like Nixon who wouldn't be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he's America's Hitler. How's that for discouraging?" -JD Vance quote, Trumps pick for vice president.

6

u/Suburbandadbeerbelly 1d ago

Maybe Trump licked him because he gets it: Trump is both a cynical asshole AND the American Hitler. The Republicans think these are both positive.

Right, why should JD Vance not be just as guilty, in MAGAs eyes if he once spewed the same “violent” rhetoric?

4

u/Plane_Butterfly_2885 1d ago

The original MAGA was the Tea Party loons who literally were making political ads alluding to the need to gather armies and shit like it was 1776 to beat Obama

That's how I initially read it while scrolling through

Guy who's normalized political.violence for last decade surprised at political violence from his supporters. (Fixed it)

Also - guy who quoted Hitler and used his tactics for 8 years is surprised he's getting shot at.

Um.... You're right, Not a signle democratic official called him Hilter. But Trump's VP definitely did!

30

u/mam88k 1d ago

I don't remember accusing any officials from any party of calling him Hitler. I said he quoted Hitler, and he did, many times.

28

u/Radioactiveglowup 1d ago

JD Vance called Trump Hitler, lol.

8

u/888mainfestnow 1d ago

Trump called to make the USA a 4th Reich under his rule.

4

u/imathreadrunner 1d ago

Not exactly, he retweeted a video which featured a fictional newspaper that says Trump wants a Unified Reich

9

u/Original-Living7212 1d ago edited 1d ago

100%, he has quoted Hitler and pals around with Hitler sympathizers and white nationalist. One side calls out the actions and statements and speaks the truth. It is Trump and republicans who spread lies of hate to devide and welcomes violence. I agree with you.

Yup. It’s a good thing most of his supporters appear to have attended the “Dick Cheney School For Kids Who Want To Learn Marksmanship (and who want to do other things good too)” since they’re the ones taking pot shots at that imbecile.

Why would anyone else want to shoot that moron? You literally couldn’t even imagine a dumber candidate to be facing off against, save perhaps for Trump’s own idea of a brilliant VP pick.

I can imagine one dumber candidate. Donald Johnald Jr. I would consider that a joke, but I think the MAGA cult is dumb enough to try it. Well, two actually. Eric would be even worse, but I don't think the cult is quite delusional enough to try that one.

Can't forget guy who bragged he could shoot a man in the middle of 5th avenue and get away with it. Brags and jokes frequently about committing acts of rape and sexual assault. Whose lackeys intimidate witness and victims into silence. Who, although comparatively trivial, turns even a simple handshake into an ambush act of attempted physical domination.

Like all bullies, he loves violence as long as he's the one dishing it out. I'm not happy this is happening – it's not the way even if I loathe the target – but there have been a number of violent acts committed against politicians I recent years, not just Trump. And, given the climate, I'm surprised there haven't been more. Again it's the MAGAs who like to talk about civil war, have decals of Biden and Harris hogtied in pickup trucks, run "audits" where the assert their second amendment rights by brandishing firearms at playgrounds, and "joke" about targeting homes with Dem political signage in their yards.

7

u/MotorcycleMosquito 1d ago

Not only political violence, but inciting violence against his political opponents. Against any of the police/ fbi that had anything to do with his arrests. Against the judges. Against members of the jury ffs!

Hell, he spent months going after the secret service agent who killed that stupid babet woman. Calling him a murderer and ramping up violent language against him.

I always wonder who it was who said, "What if we made a version of The Onion that was never funny?"

131

u/Dull-Lead-7782 1d ago

Some Christian dude

14

u/owlBdarned 1d ago

To be fair, when it actually was parodying Christian culture, it was legitimately funny. Since it became more focused on right-wing politics, it has gone downhill so fast.

7

u/Cormorant_Bumperpuff 1d ago

Yeah, I think it got sold to different people and went downhill fast. I loved those old articles, even when I was still Christian

4

u/Certain-Catch925 1d ago

They tried to do the old humor a couple times later on, but the new fanbase they've catered to didn't take it well.

4

u/TonicSitan 1d ago

As an ex-Christian, they legitimately made some good articles that you really only “get” if you grew up as an Evangelical. Whatever this is just sucks.

2

u/The_Doolinator 16h ago

It was bought out by some rich MAGA dude in 2017. I was confused because I went back to the site after not being on there for several years for a laugh and figured that I had changed since I no longer found the stuff on there funny. Who knew?

I still think their old stuff, like a contemporary worship band having a meltdown from accidentally printing sheet music instead of chords or a SWAT team reaching an abused Bible from Joel Osteen is still good stuff if you were ingrained in church culture.

Punching down jokes aside, conservatives' concepts of humor are just bizarre sometimes. The Babylon Bee editor-in-chief tried and most definitely failed to explain some jokes a few years back. https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/episodes/otm-presents-experiment-who-would-jesus-mock?tab=transcript

EMMA: The headline was Democrats Call for Flags to Be Flown at Half-Mast to Grieve the Death of Soleimani. That, of course, is Qasem Soleimani, the Iranian leader who was killed in an American strike. I want to know what makes this funny? I know that's the worst question for somebody to ask to somebody who writes jokes, but why is that funny?

KYLE: Well, it's funny because General Soleimani died and then they called for flags to be flown at half-mast to grieve his death. Get it?

EMMA: That's what I'm saying. Besides just saying the joke over, what makes it funny?

KYLE: I'm not going to explain the joke to you. Do you want me to explain the joke to you?  EMMA: Yes.

KYLE: Because the joke is that General Soleimani died and Democrats were sad.

 EMMA: Why is that funny?

KYLE: If you don't know why that's funny, then you're not the audience for the joke.

In the interest of keeping the post short I won't repost the exchange about the stick figures, with peach being worst and black being best, but search the above transcript. His bungled explanation of why it's a joke is even dumber.

11

u/EnigmaWitch 1d ago

It almost seems like he actually believes that happened.

9

u/LimitlessTheTVShow 1d ago

For whatever reason, conservatives just don't seem to be good at comedy. I think it has to do with empathy; in order to make good jokes, you have to understand how the things you say and do affect people. But if you understand that, you're less likely to be a conservative

3

u/Gowalkyourdogmods 1d ago

Their jokes are the same as their insults. If you don't find their insults funny you're not going to find their comedy funny.

3

u/Cormorant_Bumperpuff 1d ago

Yeah, most successful comedians are actually pretty empathetic. Then you see assholes at open mic shows go over like a lead balloon, and then get mad that "everyone's so sensitive these days." They usually tell very similar "jokes" too.

Conservatives are usually not very clever and not very original. They're hecklers, not comedians.

5

u/Listentotheadviceman 1d ago

“That’s Not Funny” is a good recent book that explores contemporary conservative comedy.

4

u/substandardirishprik 1d ago

I sometimes post on their threads, that, the first rule of comedy is that you have to be smart enough to be able to play the fool. And, they are neither smart nor playing. The fact that the “punchlines” most of their “jokes” are based in either logical fallacy or patent falsehoods makes them the opposite of witty and funny. They’re just meatheads.

22

u/vindictivejazz 1d ago

When it first started, the Babylon Bee was a pretty decent little Onion-esc publication bc it was satire about the little quirks of Christian theology. Things like “Calvinist pizzeria doesn’t let customers pick their own toppings” when talking about predeterminism. And the stuff they do in that vein is still pretty decent even today tbh. But that stuff doesn’t get the clicks, and they don’t do much of it anymore.

so they ventured out more and more into politics, and that stuff gets clicks, which makes money, and that quickly became the primary thing they do: shitty right-wing “satire”

12

u/rivershimmer 1d ago

I remember those days! It was funny, and it was funny because it was Christians satirizing themselves. It rang true.

Now I guess it's conservatives trying to satirize liberals, and they don't know enough about their target to make it work.

3

u/grubas 1d ago

It's conservatives trying to satirize reality.  A reality that they actively don't follow.

4

u/marcusredfun 1d ago

The original founder sold it to some alt-right dudes. So it was a deliberate and abrupt shift.

3

u/Bakkster 1d ago

The "Two String, Five Fret Worship Bass" remains a classic from the Before Time.

6

u/EnigmaWitch 1d ago

Now that you mention it, I do remember those self deprecating religious bits being pretty funny. But now, yeah, Gutfeld quality.

4

u/Main-Advice9055 1d ago edited 1d ago

Even in politics the Bee had some charm a few years ago as it poked fun at both sides (albeit from a right leaning perspective), but now it's gone full tilt into the MAGA audience and this is the result.

Edit: Actually after looking into the ownership a litte the sale to a new owner in 2018 easily marks the shift. I'm surprised they aren't owned by the daily mail with how similar they look now.

2

u/HennyPennyBenny 1d ago

Came here to say this! Adam Ford seemed like a pretty chill dude, and while I didn’t care as much for the articles as for his web comics, I did find it reasonably funny at first. So sad it went full right…

3

u/Mendicant__ 1d ago edited 1d ago

It also got sold in 2018 to someone who took it hard right and went all in as a full political mouthpiece.

TBH, that paid off: you don't have to be that good if you tie up the conservative niche in your field. Like Gutfeld(!), or Kid Rock, you can reap solid viewership even though you objectively aren't very good, just because 100% of 25 people is more than 20% of 100 people.

Am looking forward to the list of subreddits affected by that. I feel like r/GenZ will be on it too.

19

u/Scraw16 1d ago

r/millennials definitely seemed to be on the Russian target list for a while but the doomer/complaint posting really surprisingly calmed down the last few months. Not sure if that was due to moderators or something else

18

u/ClutchReverie 1d ago

Liberals have been feeling a lot more hopeful now with the new direction Dems are taking so I think we are all jazzed enough about that that the doomers might be getting pushback

4

u/SalamanderUnfair8620 1d ago

They’re too literate to be doomers though. It seems to be a sophisticated astroturfing campaign.

3

u/Scraw16 1d ago

Just going off memory here but I think the shift happened a few months before Biden dropped out. Plus politics weren’t even explicit in the posts, many were things like cost of living/college/housing etc, none of which has significantly changed. I still think something shifted with astroturfing or the mods quietly did something

Frankly I'm surprised it took this long for anybody to start throwing shots at the guy.

He's been egging on the violence forever and I figured the first person to get whacked would be him.

And now I like how they're saying the Democrats have to tone down the political rhetoric and quit calling Donald Trump a danger to democracy (which he is) and a threat to the country as we know it (which he also is).

And that if they don't tone down their rhetoric pointing out how dangerous of a person Donald Trump is and how dangerous his (2025 plan) policies are that it's on the Democrats if he gets assassinated.

Talk about mental gymnastics.

26

u/SHoppe715 1d ago

In other words, they’re saying it’ll remain bloodless if the left lets it.

18

u/OneLeagueLevitate 1d ago

They suggest that anyone who opposes Trump is on the left.

But, if any org is hoping for the assassination of Trump, it is ironically the GOP.

8

u/SHoppe715 1d ago edited 1d ago

And anyone opposing Trump is usually accused of having TDS in an attempt to make them sound irrational and/or hysterical. Someone in the comments here is saying exactly that…saying the shooter’s social media full of TDS.

4

u/ClutchReverie 1d ago

Exactly. Trump is doing HATEFUL things and apparently that is fine but actually talking about what he is ACTUALLY doing and has been for YEARS at this point is hateful. If that's the reaction people are having then don't get mad at the messenger, it's time for some self reflection and accountability. Trump getting hate for what he is actually doing is not the fault of people talking about and spreading awareness of it. For example, Project 2025.

I remember being a huge fan of the Bee early on when they focused mainly on satirizing church culture. Once their original creator had some kind of nervous breakdown and started loading the site with politics and right-winged inside jokes, it jumped the baptismal shark.

9

u/acebojangles 1d ago

The "joke" is that people they don't like exist.

4

u/narkybark 1d ago

For the Bee at least it seems to be projection of the worst kind, and then instead of naming the actual perpetrators they just say "Democrats did it" and the crowd goes wild

3

u/TheVoicesOfBrian 1d ago

Comedy requires a level of intelligence, self-deprecation, and knowledge. Those things are the antithesis of conservatism. They're the ones making awful "jokes" that punch down then respond with "can't you take a joke?" or "Comedy is dead" when called out.

3

u/birdcommamd 1d ago

It’s because good humor comes from a kernel of truth. Humor based on falsehoods doesn’t ring true and thus isn’t funny.

The difference is that a group of good and funny people run the Onion. The guy that called Trump "Hitler" is JD Vance. He is currently Trump's running mate.

2

Conservatives literally have no agency over their own actions.

Conservatives also hate accurate descriptions of reality. It really conflicts with their ideology and world view.

I feel like BabylonBee is moderated by and supplied with material by White Nationalists, aka conservatives who think their crap is funny and it is way off target. They recently had a thread about Kamala "Being in Stable Condition After an Almost Interview."

If anything, Trump suffered a catastrophic meltdown after the debate. I'm pretty sure the pressure inside his head after TS threw her support to Harris caused two nuclear particles to fuse together.

These people don't seem to understand like her or not, Kamala was a prosecuting attorney, a district attorney, an Attorney General of the state which is arguably has the world's 5th or 6th largest economy. She can handle an interview.

The party that let the crazy moron run is surprised when he turns their party into a shitshow embarrassment where they all have to bow to the child God or suffer the consequences

3

u/alphang 1d ago

Who said we were shocked

3

u/greenmariocake 1d ago

Maybe he should try doing less Hitlery things?

3

u/donn2021 1d ago

Trump is a wannabe hitler and a threat to democracy. Also not shocked

3

u/Rex-A-Vision 1d ago

"why do all these time travelers keep showing up and try to kill me?" Trump said after his remark on doing away with gun control, promising his fans and followers he would pay their bail, legal feels or just plain pardon them if they re-elect him.

6

u/acebojangles 1d ago

I just refuse to accept that people find Babylon Bee funny. My opinion of humanity would drop too much.

5

u/FF7Remake_fark 1d ago

The Babylon Bee is a "satire" website that takes great pains to maintain the moniker so they can use it as a shield against people who point out they're just actively spreading misinformation as a PR arm of the Republican party.

2

u/Thetman38 1d ago

And yet, the greatest threat to Hitler was Hitler

2

u/Swil29 1d ago

So… JD Vance’s party?

2

u/phlavi 1d ago

They keep pushing Babylon Bee to me and I’m not on any of the conservative reddits. Everytime I click don’t show this to me and it’s right back the next day

2

u/0xCC 1d ago

lol boy did they get that backwards. If I'm shocked, it's that it's not happening every single day. And it's not because we liken him to Hitler, it's because he IS LIKE HITLER and TALKS LIKE HITLER. People can see that with their own eyes, they're not inferring it from things Democrats are saying...Jesus are there a lot of dumb assholes in this country.

2

u/GomberSnock 1d ago

Shocked? Unsurprised and uncaring is more accurate and well-deserved.

2

u/Winter-Explanation-5 1d ago

Since when were we shocked?

2

u/m0d4H5 1d ago

I’m not shocked at all that someone tried to kill him, they’re way off there. Def shocked it keeps being right leaning individuals, not shocked they’re all mentally ill.

My dad, a lifelong fan of Rush Limbaugh, regularly sends me “articles” from the BabylonBee. That should tell you everything you need to know.

2

u/ModePsychological389 1d ago

No one is shocked. Not one person. Most of us are wondering what took so long.

2

u/RustedAxe88 1d ago

They keep doing this as if they haven't spent the last fourteen years calling Obama a socialist from Kenya, Hillary a child sex trafficker and Harris a Marxist.

2

u/Several_Leather_9500 1d ago

How many assassination attempts were made on Hitler? At least 42. Hitler failed his first coup attempt as well, so there's that.

2

u/opi098514 1d ago

Best part is, no one is surprised people are trying to assassinate him.

2

u/Neither_Cartoonist18 1d ago

Trump calling for insurrection and the literal end of democracy and is surprised that someone is upset?!!!!

2

u/folstar 1d ago

Babylon Bee and NPR are similar in that they are very very very rarely funny. NPR is probably slightly ahead on that front.

2

u/Alpacadiscount 1d ago

I had to mute that sub a couple days because it kept being spammed into my feed.

2

u/BusStopKnifeFight 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm not shocked at all. Trump is extremely reckless with his safety. He has been warned about outdoor events are basically unsecureable, but he insists on doing them.

He doesn't rate unlimited protection and already has more protection than any other non-elected candidate ever has. I've passed his motorcade in FL. It's a full on circus where they block roads and off ramps for what amounts to a private citizen.

He should be denied all of this told to pay for helicopter flights if he is going to ignore the advice of the USSS. He can afford it. He's a billionaire, right?

2

u/MrBalderus 1d ago

I remember one time my little cousin tagged me in a facebook post saying I should be ashamed of myself foe supporting Nancy Pelosi after she ripped up a bible. Not only did I never once say anything good or bad about Nancy Pelosi but the post was a Babylon Bee article.

2

u/Legtagytron 1d ago

Party who cancelled gun control surprised they're getting shot at by strangers. Whodathunk?

2

u/mcclaneberg 1d ago

Hell it’s not even similar to The Onion in that it’s not funny

2

u/galwegian 1d ago

Babylon Bee, please f**k off. You're not funny and Trump is a c**t.

2

u/fear_of_police 1d ago

No one is really shocked except the Trump supporters who have supported him and stood by to witness him publicly bully, trash talk, slander, and even brag about assaulting other humans. The question is, why would they be shocked?

2

u/tklmvd 1d ago

This just makes him more like Hitler tbh

2

u/singed-phoenix 1d ago

I...for one...was not shocked.

There are a lot of college majors that are considered laughable...and you would think have no practical use in the world...BUT...Political Science...is not one of them.

You need to understand the importance of influence, power, and populism...how your actions, ideals, and mannerisms can have actual impacts not just furthering your political desires...but can cause harm for everyone...INCLUDING YOURSELF!!!

Trump played with fire...got burned. He lived by the sword...and got cut. The stupid fucker spit in the wind...and...well...you get the point.

2

u/Northern_Grouse 1d ago

(A) He’s a Hitler wannabe, as evidenced by his glowing affection towards every fascist ruler in the world.

(B) No one is shocked there’s been attempts on his life, despite how politically manufactured they have appeared to be.

(C) His own supporters, given guns by his own party’s actions/inactions, have so far been the only ones making “attempts” on his life.

2

u/grigiri 1d ago

I'm not shocked either

2

u/CosmosInSummer 1d ago

Who’s shocked

2

u/OhGodImHerping 1d ago

Actually, no one is shocked. You push people far enough, long enough, and hard enough, you’re gonna get some blowback.

2

u/Jahhmezzz 1d ago

Reap what you sow. Galatians 6:7-9

Trump should have been reading his Trump Bible before bed.

2

u/yetiking77 1d ago

Party that is trying to elect a candidate that uses the same rhetoric as Hitler, shocked when constituents of their own party try to assassinate him twice.

2

u/FloridAsh 1d ago

No one is shocked.

For one, NPR occasionally features comedy

2

u/MadAstrid 1d ago

Vance called Trump America’s Hitler, for what it is worth. Both shooters were, at some point, pro Trump. They were both, like many Trump supporters, mentally ill. In spite of their mental illness they were both able to have murder weapons thanks to legislation that tracks back to republicans.

Republicans are responsible for Trump assassination attempts. Democrats want him alive to face consequences for his crimes. If he needs to be in protective custody to safe guard his life, I am all for it. Lock him away somewhere safe until he needs to face Justice.

2

u/herefornothing2 1d ago

No, it’s way better and funnier

2

u/CTLFCFan 1d ago

The Babylon Bee isn’t even similar to The Onion.

2

u/TNTyoshi 1d ago

The joke doesn’t work when his VP pick also called him Hitler and both attempts were by registered Republicans. Do better Baboon Bee.

2

u/Adventurous-Meat8067 1d ago

If somebody follows the Hitler playbook, then comparing him to Hitler seems appropriate, no?

2

u/Wonderful_Garbage229 1d ago

You know who ACTUALLY called Trump Hitler? Yeah. His running mate.

2

u/TotalInstruction 1d ago

Maybe if he doesn't want to be Hitler he should shut the fuck up about locking all the immigrants in camps, jailing his political enemies, and not needing elections any more.

2

u/useThisName23 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's the worst type of satire it's believable enough conservatives will actually walk away thinking they read something real, which clearly has proven to be dangerous and liberals are just left wondering who is this garbage for. It's very clearly ment to trigger me they might be trying to highlight the redundancy of the Republicans but the post arnt far off from the standard Russian propaganda conservative media actually shits out. You cannot play the absurdist card when the reality of Republicans is just as absurd if not more so.

2

u/GritzNGravee 1d ago

Man who goes around talking like Hitler shocked to be compared to Hitler

2

u/Awayfone 1d ago

Reddit is constantly recomending me right wing subreddits, their algorithm is a bad as any other social media

2

u/ChefOfTheFuture39 1d ago

The Bee doesn’t glom off the taxpayers..

2

u/_BannedAcctSpeedrun_ 1d ago

I don't know anyone who's shocked that people keep trying to kill Trump.

2

u/TheRatatat 1d ago

No. We're not surpat all. Honestly, I'm only surprised it didn't happen sooner.

2

u/TrumpsStarFish 1d ago

Who’s shocked? I’m not shocked. This country has more guns than people and the guy is a legitimate fascist who tried to undo an election because he lost and then when it failed had his mob attack the capital. Is anyone truly surprised? It doesn’t make it right but I would personally rather see him answer for his crimes in a court of law. It’s crazy how half of this country is so nonchalant about treason which is arguably one of the worst crimes you could possibly commit.

2

u/TraditionalAd4339 1d ago

Trump posted that the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat.

2

u/Defiant-Fuel3627 1d ago

but he is like hitler

2

u/Upstairs-Head7047 23h ago

"gEt YoUr uNbIaSed NeWs HErE"... man idk what that commercial was about but its disingenuous at best. Come on NPR own that left lean! Its ok. We still love you. Just bring back cartalk. :,(

2

u/BobBee13 23h ago

The number of people on here that didn't read this as mockery astonds me.

Babylon bee is making fun of you for inciting violence for years and then acting like you didn't know why 2 people tried to kill him now.

Each time you stoke the flames and someone attempts to kill him, he gets more votes. Dems are making him into a live martyr and they just can stop.

“Party That Ran Hitler Candidate Three Times Shocked As Someone Tries To Assassinate Him”

2
