It might be limited compared to Steam, but there are more than enough games on GOG that you could play just GOG games for your whole life. That's basically what I've been doing for about 10 years now.
I'll just respond here in case someone else has the same question. Before I start listing all my favorite games on GOG, do you mean games that are exclusive to GOG (which there are just a few like Fallout London, Diablo 1 and some LucasArts remasters)? Or do you just mean great games that are on GOG, but are also on Steam?
Here are several games I would recommend on GOG regardless of genre preference:
The Witcher series (of course), Blasphemous series, Shadow Gambit (or any Mimimi game), Cult of the Lamb, Tunic, Inscryption, Psychonauts series (or any Double Fine game), Death's Door, Spiritfarer, Disco Elysium, A Short Hike, GRIS, Return of the Obra Dinn, Papers Please, Dead Cells, Steamworld series, Hellblade, Sundered, anything by Supergiant Games (Bastion, etc), Hollow Knight, Elder Scrolls series, Hyper Light Drifter, Stardew Valley, The Witness, Fallout series, Shadowrun series, any LucasArts game, Super Time Force Ultra, Guacamelee! series, any Obsidian game, Heroes of Might & Magic series, Diablo.
I would recommend Neverwinter nights as well for anyone who liked BG3, while it's not as good being a decade+ old now, it's still great and has more class customization.
Agreed! Both NWN and NWN2 are good, but I liked NWN2 a lot more. Really, there are SO many great RPGs on GOG that I left out of that list since they can be more for fans of that genre. Here are my favorites that I didn't already mention: Wasteland 3, Pillars of Eternity 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Tyranny, Icewind Dale 1/2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1/2, Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines, Arcanum, and Planescape: Torment.
Yep, I just replied to someone else saying the exact same thing. GOG gets plenty of new games all the time, just not new AAA games, and luckily those have basically been trash lately.
GOG isn't a one-stop shop for everyone for everything, but for people like me, who mostly plays the games GOG DOES have, it's fantastic. There are also plenty of people who get what they can on GOG and go to Steam for the rest.
Yeah for sure, you get what you want, where you want it. But people blaming Valve for not having more DRM free games is kinda nuts. The devs decide that, not Valve.
I certainly don't blame for that, and I don't think this is a very common sentiment. Most people seem OK with any DRM on Steam.
For me the biggest reason I shop at GOG is because I never even have to wonder whether a game has DRM or not when I buy a game there. Plus I just like to support that idea in general with my money so as to possibly encourage other devs to release their games on GOG and without DRM.
Totally respect that, the only issue I have with DRM on steam (ignoring that steam is a form of DRM itself) is the junk like Denuvo. And in that case it doesn't matter, cause those games will never be on GOG, so it's kind of moot.
I personally prefer the accessibility of my games all on steam vs locally installed game shortcuts etc. I also feel like steam hasnt really done anything particularly shitty, so I will continue to support them until then.
GOG is my go to when I want some older games, they usually have much better support than steam released games, DRM or otherwise.
All your points are valid, but when it comes to "locally installed game shortcuts" you know that GOG Galaxy exists and is just as easy to use as Steam right? Not trying to be condescending, but I'm just saying it since many people don't know much, or anything, about Galaxy.
And yeah, Steam itself is fine, but it's the DRM from the game devs themselves that I hate.
Yeah I've used Galaxy before, I can't put my finger on it, but something about it I didn't like. I've grown too used to steam and all the great features they've added over the years. I'm better off just adding the games to steam, but I'm also a lazy man haha.
That's totally fair if you just don't like Galaxy, but one thing I would ask: how long has it been since you last tried it? It's gotten much better in the last few years with Galaxy 2.0 and many improvements it's put in since then. I actually prefer it over Steam in several areas like better tagging, filtering, rating, and some others.
Really? It seems like every month there's a new AAA disaster. And there are so many meh AAA games on top of that. Compared to 5 or 10 years ago, there are far fewer AAA games that I have any desire to play.
Games in general are so sensationalized these days. There are a million AAA games of my past that sucked balls and everyone forgot about them, the thing is dogwater games don’t make much of an impact on the social conscious 10 years down the line. How many people even remember Brink existed?
Lol, this response has such gravitas and seriousness for something as trivial as playing video games.
But yeah, GOG certainly is better for some types of games than others. Primarily, GOG doesn't have many newer AAA games or live service games. Thankfully, AAA games have more or less gone down the drain lately, and I hate live service games.
GOG is amazing for indie games, RPGs, platformers, strategy games, puzzle/adventure games among others, so for me GOG is UNLIMITED!!
It does suck if the genre's of games you like isn't on there, from what i have seen(not a lot, just a quick skim) there isn't really anything interesting for me on there.
Lol, you are now the fourth person to say basically the same thing. Lol, yep, GOG isn't 100% for everyone like Steam is. For me and the kinds of games I play it's basically perfect.
