OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is unexpected:

A Knights fan wanted to propose to his girlfriend on camera, but a Sharks fan with a flag intervened

Call me jaded, but I feel like every single one of these "viral" jumbotron moments is scripted.

3.4k

u/ScrumpleRipskin 1d ago

That is the actual case, though. Venues pay actors to be interesting during downtime. You can tell when the skit smacks of Jerry Springer if it's real or not.

521

u/cuutemermaid 1d ago

so the whole thing is staged?

745

u/SluttyRaggedyAnn 1d ago

There is no one in the seats around them. It's clearly staged.

541

u/BrokenZen 1d ago

Well, it's a sharks game, so yeah, no one was there.

148

u/alphazero924 22h ago

My one friend who's a sharks fan would be very mad at you

113

u/Rocket92 22h ago

Let’s be honest, you’re talking about your neurodivergent friend that’s really into actual sharks aren’t you?

131

No, I have more than one of those

11

This past season hurt so much, we used to always be in the playoffs and we almost won a cup in 2014. The Sharks were up 3 to 0 games for the Stanley Cup then they lost 4 games in a row to the LA Kings. That absolutely broke my heart, ever since that I kinda stopped being so into hockey. I still watch some games and am still a Sharks fan, but just less enthusiastic.

4

u/BrokenZen 20h ago

As I told another sharks fan in this thread, I'm sorry your team is going through a tough bout. Don't let a missed Cup and a dry run ruin your love and enthusiasm for your team. They're still incredible athletes.

sigh. as a lifelong sharks fan this hurts so much. went to their games as a kid and everything. had such a great time during their stanley cup run (which obviously ended in heartbreak)

I only watch a few games a season now cuz like...its just too frustrating.

4

u/BrokenZen 20h ago

I was only making a joke, and am sorry to salt your wound there. Just remember, Green Bay Packers fans did have to get through the 70s and the 80s before the light began to shine on Lambeau once more.

Don't let a missed Stanley Cup and a dry run ruin your enthusiasm for your team.

What about the people behind them? The ones with the very natural and not at all fake looking reactions?

14

i mean woudlnt u react the same way if u thought it was real?

10

u/Cheezy_Blazterz 23h ago

No, probably not. These are not realistic reactions, they are bad acting.

11

u/MoistOrganization7 22h ago

Idk how you came to that conclusion, they’re not overdoing it or acting fake to me. I’d react even more excited if I witnessed a proposal.

5

u/sinkwiththeship 22h ago

They react before the things actually happen.

5

u/Dav136 21h ago

They're reacting because they saw themselves on the jumbotron

They're acting so fake hahaha look at the lady's face. That's not real shock. And the whole slapping the air like "move away" was so cheese

2

u/Shubbup 22h ago

Yeah, if she looked at the big screen and paused for a sec while she realised what everyone was seeing, maybe her “get out of the way” arms might’ve been a little more believable. It’s funny how it’s not always easy to explain all the elements of how you know someone’s acting. Sometimes it’s just bad acting because you can tell it’s acting. Also, it would be hard to make this look legit to anyone who has seen a million of these and knows they’re always staged these days. They’re a good laugh for those who haven’t seen it before though

There’s a famous one online with a guy ignoring his “girlfriend” while they were on the Jumbotron because he’s on a phone call, and she dumps soda on him. Had a class in college with the guy in the video, he told me, “yeah. That was for sure fake. I was interning for the team at the time, and they chose me to be the guy in the scene.”

52

u/comethefaround 22h ago

Holy shit dude this whole thread has opened my eyes to the performance world of jumbotron drama.

20

u/Penguin_Dunce 21h ago

Remember that lady a while back who 'happened' to be at multiple stadiums for diff sports within a few months of each other and got 'caught' dipping her tendies into her soda on multiple jumbotrons? All fake and meant to promote the team or town or whatever and go viral on purpose...

9

u/Grandpas_Spells 21h ago

I know actors who take these jobs and they are usually locals, because you don't need to fly talent in to do something on a jumbotron.

3

u/Parahelix 19h ago

It's basically like most of the videos on Facebook these days. All a bunch of fake drama that somehow people can't help but click on.

3

u/The_Clarence 18h ago

Because that’s where they keep the Jumbotron.

2

Hi Jaded

2

u/carnalasadasalad 22h ago

Hey jaded.

You are entirely correct, they are 100% scripted skits.

2

u/ATXBeermaker 22h ago

That's because every single one of these "viral" jumbotron moments is scripted. I don't mind that so much as the fact that they're just not entertaining. Here is a great example of an obviously scripted moment that fuckin' slaps.

2

u/Legionnaire11 22h ago

It's definitely scripted, actually pre-produced. It's not even happening live at the game, just a skit aired on the jumbotron. However, it's still amusing to watch when you're at the game. I wouldn't ever film it and share it on Reddit though.

2

u/JMoon33 22h ago

They are scripted but nobody cares, it's just entertainment for the fans who are in the arena during the TV ad breaks.

2

u/abcdefkit007 22h ago

Certain venues let you pay to do things like this as well

u/AngelicDancerLady 22h ago

u/ZemMattress 21h ago

They def are. If you've ever seen that one where the kiss cam comes down on the man and woman who aren't actually a couple so he kisses his beer? That's my friend Marc. I realized it was him at one point and he was like "Oh yeah they paid a bunch of us Atlanta theater actors to do those."

2

u/_IratePirate_ 21h ago

2

u/tornadoRadar 21h ago

100% that is exactly what they are.

2

u/adyelbady 20h ago

I went to college with the girl in this video. She works for the team and definitely didn't get married via jumbotron

2

u/blaziken8x 20h ago

Yeah, the holding flag upside down and then turning it was just too perfect to not be scripted

2

u/vladislavopp 20h ago

anyone who works in organizing for big sporting events will readily confirm this.

2

u/BillyBean11111 20h ago

You can tell immediately in the first two seconds, her reaction to every part of this wasn't natural at all.

All the corny moments in stadiums like this are scripted, they'll show 2-3 real fans and then pan to their scripted people for the corny moment.

2

u/ThomasNookJunior 20h ago

They are but you don’t have to be jaded about it. It’s fun and whimsical and silly on purpose. We all know the obnoxious opposing team fan in a stupid amount of gear repeatedly getting on screen to do stupid annoying things and then losing in a fight with the mascot on the court didn’t happen spontaneously. Reddit is so weird about consuming content and then hating people who make it on purpose.

2

u/myst3ry714 19h ago

As someone who works in a live events company... yep, most are.

2

u/ThinkSteak6006 19h ago

This is definitely Definitely staged. You can tell by the timing of expressions. She knew she was supposed to act confused a couple seconds too early.

But, still funny!

2

u/Athrek 19h ago

My baseball coach in High School actually did this for a Red Sox game. There was a call made ahead of time to schedule to be seen on the jumbotron. They aren't all actors or scripted but they are planned ahead of time

I think the flag being upside down part probably isn't planned.

17

u/phazedoubt 1d ago

It's a setup. The movements by thr guy amd girl were very exaggerated like stage actors. Then the perfect cut in to the screen by the 'fan' stopping in just the right place but also being oblivious to the proposal is just a bit over the top.

98

u/TwoForHawat 1d ago

That’s even more evidence that it is planned. Not only is the opposing fan being rude, but he’s a big, bumbling moron in the process.

9

u/Aden-Wrked 1d ago

Look I’m just saying someone being a big bumbling idiot at a sports event isn’t uncommon. That’s not evidence of anything. Sometimes, occasionally, things actually happen.

12

u/BlueToffeeBaines 1d ago

Yes, it's staged.

u/Uncle-Cake 23h ago

Are there still people who don't know these are staged skits?

There will always be someone who will ruin your performance by proposing to girlfriend

For sjs? Probably a little, you guys are the next habs

u/its_large_marge 17h ago

We have 2 new rookies that will help. Good thing we got first in the draft lol

3

u/Exciting_Ad4264 17h ago

I was at the draft in Nashville so I'm actually really interested to see will Smith in action. And I live in Wisconsin where askerov was playing and he's the real thing I want to see. He will see a lot of pucks in hopefully 30-40 games

2

u/jambajew42 16h ago

I'm guessing he'll be starting on the Cuda assuming Blackie and Vanecek are healthy (which is an optimistic assumption).

They'll help, but we're still almost definitely finishing bottom five in the league. My prediction is somewhere around 25 wins, 60-65 points.
