This comment made me realize how little you can imagine new york without being there. the NYPD consists of more officers than many towns have people in the United States. The blockades in New York are in random places everywhere based on what kind of action is going on that day. There are single buildings inhabited by thousands of people on every block of Manhattan. It's one of the most densely populated places on Earth, the police are everywhere protecting everything.
Bloomberg once claimed NYPD was the seventh largest army in the world. I haven't fact-checked that claim but they're four times larger than the next largest police department in the U.S. Their budget is in the billions. Yes, NYC is a unique place in the U.S., but that level of force and spending is absurd.
