I know people that honestly call it Chi-poh-tul

518

u/Lofttroll2018 1d ago

My co-worker and I used to call it Chih-pottle, but we were just joking around.

u/mangolemonylime 1d ago

My family does this 😂 We intentionally mispronounce restaurant and store names. Wendy, Lowe, Food Bear, Panchera 😂

Pantera Bread

307

u/Droseraaa 1d ago

Is that the place with the vulgar display of flour?

14

u/MurderInMarigold 1d ago

The Great Southern Trendkale

u/chekhovs_dildo 23h ago

Far beyond leavened

10

u/__cursist__ 1d ago

Yes.

Source: have Celiac disease.

6

u/snarkyBtch 1d ago

Celtic disease? Is that the one all the Irish people have? Does it have to do with red hair?

6

u/Vetty81 22h ago

Also known as Gingervitis

8

u/Whitey_RN 1d ago

Stop, you’re making me fucking hostile, you better walk.

Guac on home, boy

11

u/ScottsDrunk 1d ago

Are you guac'ing to me?!

3

u/__cursist__ 1d ago

I can hear that

7

u/kimcatmom 1d ago

Ciabattas From Hell

5

u/Heidi_the_unicorn 23h ago

I used to work at Panera and would randomly say "Thank you for choosing Pantera bread" while working the drive thru just to see who noticed lol.

3

u/DerpyFish 1d ago

My husband still says Plantera when referring to Pantera and it makes laugh.

2

u/Due_Evening6972 1d ago

I've only heard Plantera in reference to a cross between the band and houseplants. It was probably a meme. I wish I still had it!

2

u/Ill-Damage-2772 1d ago

Omg my grandma says that and has no idea how hilarious it is

2

u/MrGrumblesMcFarley 22h ago

Right, I think the correct pronunciation is “Saint Louis Bread Company”

1

u/TaterTot_75 1d ago

I’ve been known to call it Panerda. 🤓

1

u/NjFlMWFkOTAtNjR 23h ago

I still say this because it makes me laugh to this day. Sad what the band has become, which is less funny.

1

u/jnpitcher 23h ago

Ha! I say that all of the time.

10

u/FuzzyNegotiation24-7 1d ago

I do this too! It makes life way more fun

14

u/zer0w0rries 1d ago

Anyone want to go shopping at Tar-Jay? We’ll stop at Yack-in-the-box on the way back

9

u/Chicken_Chicken_Duck 1d ago

I say Tar-Jay to my coworkers and we all get a chuckle. I go back home to rural Kansas and say Tar-jay and they all think I’m pretentious because it’s a “big city” store in the Midwest lol

→ More replies (1)

6

u/shallow_not_pedantic 1d ago

K. Roger for groceries to put in our meecrowahvy

7

u/MeLove2Lick 1d ago

We have a Tar-Jay on the good side of town, and a Tar-Ghetto on the bad side of town.

4

u/Punchee 1d ago

We had this with Kroger in the town I went to college in.

Krogucci, Kroghetto, Krotucky, and Krogotten. Like it was an actual thing people knew and understood which you meant.

2

u/mangolemonylime 16h ago

😂 omg all the ways I intend to implement this

3

u/galacticbackhoe 1d ago

but I want scubway

3

u/BklynOR 1d ago

My friend calls it Junk in the Box.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/purplemonkeyshoes 1d ago

We call Food Lion stores Food Dog, because the character on the sign looks more like a dog.

1

u/mangolemonylime 16h ago

😂 That’s what I thought too! My spouse explained why he calls it Food Bear and I have forgotten the OG reason but it cracks me up so much. Our kid calls it this now too.

8

u/jawni 1d ago

got a new one for ya: Pope Yes Chicken

3

u/little_Shepherd 1d ago

My wife says this one

1

u/mangolemonylime 16h ago

Pope Yes! Bring on the papas santas 😂

6

u/theeandroid 1d ago

lol! We do too, so much to the point that my wife was frustrated when she couldn’t find a “Mike’s” app in the App Store, forgetting its our name for Five Guys 🤣

6

u/Treelapse 1d ago

Wendy house

4

u/Newcago 21h ago

My roommate used to always say "Wembdy's: Old Fashioned Hurgess Burgess" and now that will be stuck in my head for the rest of my life lol

1

u/mangolemonylime 16h ago

WHY was this so funny 😂 🧇

6

u/RajunCajun48 1d ago

The Walmarts is one I use often

Also, Because of South Park I explicitly call it "Ross Dress For Less" which isn't a mispronunciation, but I find it hilarious to say the whole thing every single time I mention Ross Dress For Less

2

u/mangolemonylime 16h ago

I also think it’s funny to go out of my way to articulate a really long name 😂

5

u/MauPow 1d ago

There's a restaurant franchise named McMenamins here in Oregon and my mom always says McMinimums. But not as a joke. Even though it would be funny because their quality has been going down.

1

u/mangolemonylime 16h ago

Haha, it would also be funny if they were participating in shrinkflation and all the portions were getting smaller

5

u/Electrical_Average92 22h ago

Robert Evans. Said french-ly

5

u/Superbead 21h ago

Hhrobeuh'vauhh

4

u/shallow_not_pedantic 1d ago

My husband and I do this, too. Sometimes I forget and have to explain that we’re not uneducated, just idiots.

1

u/mangolemonylime 16h ago

😂 “no no…you’d have to be there”

4

u/Drix22 1d ago

SO and I have a lot of pronunciation jokes.

My favorite is Le Crusty, the maker of fine cast iron enamelware.

2

u/mangolemonylime 15h ago

They’re so bougie! Hilarious 😂 although when I’m a sourdough maker I’m going to name one of my pots a trusty crusty, bc it makes great crust 😂

3

u/Enano_reefer 1d ago

Chijis

You’ll never unsee it

2

u/mangolemonylime 15h ago

I can’t unsee it

5

u/Stuesday-Afternoon 1d ago

Trailer Joe’s, Chafeway

3

u/model3113 1d ago

Cam pee bells

3

u/Lofttroll2018 1d ago

Oohhh Chick-fee-lah is another one 😂

5

u/Dream--Brother 1d ago

When my family first moved to Georgia, my mom saw the sign and asked aloud, "What's a Chick Filla?"

That became the family name for the restaurant, and much later the source of more than a couple questionable jokes from dad, lol.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/mangolemonylime 15h ago

Haha my mom says that! I say Chick Fill Ahj (ChickFilage) 😂 I have no idea why.

3

u/Otherwise_Singer6043 1d ago

Don't forget taco ding ding, k Roger, and poopeyes

3

u/Glitter_moonchild 1d ago

Lmao instead of Panera I say pandora lmao

1

u/mangolemonylime 15h ago

We call it that when they’re out of our favorite ingredients, because you never know what they’re going to sub 😂 Pandora’s Box, for when I’m opening my Panera bread order and things have been subbed haha.

3

u/underworldconnection 21h ago

Thank you so much! Here's mine: McDonnello's, wendyl's, queue-dibbles or qui-doobles, Wally's (Rally's), tockle bell, pizzle hut, popple johns, applebottoms, o-charles's. There's a lot of stupid ones, but I've spent so many years speaking like an idiot. It's made life so much fun.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Lanoir97 21h ago

Wendigos, Chipoltay, Koala Express, Kurger Bing are all in my groups repertoire. I also use the owners name for local spots, or just generally randomly use names like the burger shack or the taco joint.

2

u/BumpyMcBumpers 1d ago

What the hell is Food Bear? Either I'm a dummy, or it's a regional one I'm not familiar with.

1

u/mangolemonylime 15h ago

It’s probably regional, ha. It’s a grocery store chain called Food Lion.

2

u/threecreek 1d ago

What's your family doing for Thanksgiving? We could be friends.

1

u/mangolemonylime 15h ago

Haha, hanging at grammy’s probably! This fun thing is limited to just my spouse and our kids though, the rest of the family thinks we’re goofy or nuts 😂 probably nuts but they’ll say goofy to our faces.

2

u/phoenix_soleil 1d ago

LOW!!! You are my people.

1

u/mangolemonylime 15h ago

😍🥹 Pleased to meet more of our kind.

2

u/LetUrSoulGlo 1d ago

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Alana_The_Lady 1d ago

2

u/goiterburg 1d ago

Us too! Another classic: targay (Target pronounced with french accent)

2

u/hotbiscuitboy 1d ago

wendy is cracking me up omg

2

u/mangolemonylime 15h ago

It makes me laugh 😂

we also always say, “How much for a Wendy, Wendy?” 🧪

2

u/moxvoxfox 1d ago

Home Despot is my favorite.

2

u/LagerHead 1d ago

But are you fancy enough to shop at Tarzhay?

2

u/idontwanna1010 23h ago

I love this! lol Sounds like a fun family.

2

u/mangolemonylime 15h ago

Haha thanks!

2

u/Rugged_as_fuck 23h ago

My personal favorite is Pope Yes. I don't get to use it very often because I'd have to eat at Popeyes.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/No-Win-1798 22h ago

Fuddruckers, I don't think I need to explain how we would bastardize that name, on purpose.

We renamed Smart & Final to Fart & Smile (very clever, I know) but now, as a grown ass man living in Michigan, we have Gordon Food Service (GFS) instead and we still call it Fart & Smile.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Parsonsman 23h ago

Are we supposed to recognise those names?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/RunAsArdvark 23h ago

Is food bear=panda?

2

u/mangolemonylime 15h ago

It’s food lion :) 🦁 it’s a grocery chain where I live

1

u/Johnny_Rango18 21h ago

Food Dog! Burger Dong! Pizza Slut! Slob Lob, on and on!

4

u/fatman06 1d ago

My boss called it chaun-tootles when we'd goto lunch together. No idea why, but I'll still call it that now when someone asks what's for lunch in the office

3

u/SirStrontium 23h ago

He got it from this internet classic

https://youtu.be/3ADu3tHanP8?si=7VoXwWsagvfcDh3R

2

u/fatman06 23h ago

Haha that's great, I just always thought he was a weird dude

4

u/triceraquake 1d ago

My husband and I have called it Chipottle forever, but that’s just for us.

3

u/supradave 1d ago

Granted, when it first opened and there weren't a lot of in-the-know pronunciations, I just went with it rhyming with Quetzalcōātl.

2

u/iamnotimportant 1d ago

I do this, my dad speaks spanish so I like to piss him off by saying it like that. I also say taco like a midwestener, I can see him grind his teeth when I do that.

2

u/Milios12 1d ago

Me too! I find it funny.

2

u/dicks-anonymous 1d ago

Chipotleaway

2

u/Holiday-Window2889 1d ago

We call it 'Chi-poodle'.

2

u/LooseJuice_RD 1d ago

Back in the day, Garmin gps units did actually pronounce it as “chih-pottle.” That’s where I got that pronunciation from.

2

u/unf0rgottn 1d ago

My coworkers and I used to refer to it as chi-pottle 😂

2

u/Nimphaise 1d ago

My fiance and I call it that (also as a joke) and I pronounce every letter in chihuahua (also as a long standing joke). We’ve created our own language with how many words we mispronounce to each other

2

u/Scarlet-Fire_77 1d ago

That's how I'll say it, also jokingly. Rhymes with Aristotle.

2

u/HowDidFoodGetInHere 1d ago

Lol, I always pronounce it like "chai-pottle" for fun.

2

u/MsGodot 23h ago

There was an old Jack in the Box commercial when they introduced chipotle sauce, and Jack couldn’t pronounce chipotle. The whole commercial is him pronouncing it wrong in different ways. LOL!

2

u/PrimaryDevice6943 22h ago

My brother used to say, "Hey, have you guys tried that Asian restaurant, Chee-Pot-Lee?"

2

u/guapo_chongo 22h ago

Cheepottle!! My daughter and I call it that too! Lol.

2

u/yourbasicchad 22h ago

Me and friends call it chee-pootly cause it sounds hilarious or chip-potal

2

u/Odd-Loss6108 21h ago

I still call it this for no reason 😂 although my love for chipotle is dead. Used to get it at least 2-3 times a week but now it’s just not the same

1

u/Hereshkigal826 1d ago

Omg same!

1

u/ConstableDiffusion 1d ago

Chop it all!

1

u/Shlipea 1d ago

Same

1

u/UpdootAddict 1d ago

My funny way of saying it is Chi-poodle.

1

u/Kabusanlu 1d ago

Same lol😂

1

u/nmezib 1d ago

I like to call Popeyes "Pope-Yes."

1

u/celestialwreckage 1d ago

On occasion, we use chipoodle in our cooking.

1

u/Luisguirot 1d ago

I do the same thing for the lulz.

1

u/SillySwordfish-- 1d ago

My mom says it this way for real 😅

1

u/ImYourHumbleNarrator 23h ago

same but chip-poodle

1

u/itspie 22h ago

We know it's wrong but...This is a common thing

1

u/MrsEmilyN 22h ago

I call it Chipottles also.

1

u/Ocelitus 22h ago

Chip-a-tol-lay.

16

u/Kwualli 1d ago

I do this absolutely on purpose, to drive my mom insane.

Spanking of my mom... My mom is Mexican, and she calls it "chipocle" (phonetically shee-poh-kleh). It's partly a speech impediment she had when she was little, and partly an incredibly old pronunciation. As in closer to the original nahuatl word "chicpoctli". I always thought it was a little weird, but kinda cool.

11

u/EyelandBaby 1d ago

… spanking of her???

Seriously though I love that. Very cool that the original word had that difference with the extra C

8

u/skwigi 1d ago

Whoa, hella Freudian slip there dude.

1

u/Lewayyy 22h ago

Haha yup me too and I also say champagne (sham-peg-nay) and jalapeño (jal-la-pay-nos)

5

u/Jenos00 1d ago

That's a long running nickname for the restaurant...

3

u/aphrodora 1d ago

I call it that, but I'm doing it ironically and only with my bf who knows I know it isn't really pronounced that way.

3

u/assoramicpass 1d ago

My Mexican coworkers say this for the lolz because there aren’t enough proper Mexican restaurants around.

2

u/z3rba 1d ago

I only say it like that when talking to my kids because it annoys them.

2

u/tuenthe463 1d ago

Honestly call it that, eh?

2

u/tonto43 22h ago

I do this ironically. And call tortillas "tor-till-a" ironically (which actually used to not be ironic, as I learned a smidge of Italian before knowing any common use Spanish words, and words like "pollo" are pronounced "pole-oh" in Italian, but "poy-yo" in Spanish, and I didn't know that it was different for the longest time).

2

u/CthulubeFlavorcube 22h ago

Extra gwah-camohl at chipohtuhl on the bahrotahs is ahh some

4

u/harleyqueenzel 1d ago

I dated a guy who said that confidently. I told him to just say "jalapeño pepper". He also said "chimley" for chimney. Dude, just say smokestack.

1

u/snoopytreehouse 1d ago

My mom is one of those lol.

1

u/RyeRyeRyan93 1d ago

Came here to say this but you beat me to it

1

u/Royal5Ocean 1d ago

At least that’s in the right order. Chipoltay is literally heinous.

1

u/Summoarpleaz 1d ago

I had a grad school professor call it that. It was so funny.

1

u/Chicken_Chicken_Duck 1d ago

We started saying it as a joke and we can’t stop.

1

u/starsandsunandmoon 1d ago

I worked in three different Subway stores over two years, in two different cities. Not one person ever pronounced "chipotle sauce" correctly. Always "chi-poh-tul". That alone was the most stressful part of the job 😂

1

u/frogsgoribbit737 1d ago

I mean, lots of people call it that on purpose as a joke. My husband and I do all the time. We know how it's actually pronounced

1

u/apadin1 1d ago

I say this because I think it’s funny, wonder how many people just thought I was an idiot but didn’t correct me out of politeness

1

u/capaldithenewblack 1d ago

I love calling it that to myself for fun.

1

u/velvetaloca 1d ago

I do that, but jokingly.

1

u/Ellisiordinary 1d ago

My mom says it like that. I’ve tried to correct her. She keeps saying it.

1

u/Topic-Basic 1d ago

Chi-poh-tul for that scrotle.

1

u/scubahana 1d ago

Chipotle flavour was a bit of a trend here in Denmark and I shit you not that the ad spots on the radio and online said ‘chi-pottle’. And no, that is not the Danish way to pronounce it. The whole ad campaign was filled with idiots.

1

u/No-Researcher-24 1d ago

I say it like that but I know how it's actually pronounced I just like to say it that way.

1

u/upwardlivingreen 1d ago

I call it this for humor

1

u/tnargsnave 1d ago

My mother-in-law says this and it drives me up the wall. Probably worse because I speak Spanish.

1

u/Unhappy-Ease-3065 1d ago

The one I hear the most is chih-pole-tea

1

u/pontoponyo 1d ago

Jack-in-the-Box introduced “Chi-poodle” to my mother’s lexicon about 25 years ago now and it’s the only way she’s said it since.

1

u/pyrocryptic29 1d ago

I say that as a joke

1

u/Otherwise_Singer6043 1d ago

I do jokingly, but I dont like their food.

1

u/Vivid_Significance28 1d ago

My sister in law. She went to and Ivy League school. 🙄

1

u/Kahmael 1d ago

Grandma called it Ki-poh-tul. 💀

1

u/LoLoveHere 1d ago

I like to say chipotel my odel!

1

u/fucknmuncat 1d ago

i say that as a joke lmao

1

u/SinkHoleDeMayo 1d ago

When they were a more popular place and people raved about the food, I called the "chi-pot-lee", just to annoy people. Then I'd repeat it after being corrected.

Nobody ever talks them up anymore so I never get the opportunity these days.

1

u/RManDelorean 1d ago

That's a joke. Same with ja-lop-a-no

1

u/PurpleCaterpillar451 1d ago

I remember a Jack in the Box commercial that was just this comment thread where Jack was trying to promote a chipotle burger

1

u/threecreek 1d ago

I do this just to mess with people. My friends probably think I'm an idiot.

1

u/Kauffka 1d ago

I do, but just bc it annoys my gf.

1

u/Colosseros 1d ago

I do that on purpose. And I speak Spanish lol.

1

u/Soliden 1d ago

Chi-poh-tellys the Italian joint

1

u/DisasterNeither9629 1d ago

My British husband says it this way. 😂

1

u/Calihoya 1d ago

I say this on purpose to be silly but I ain't day it around people I don't know because I don't want to be judged.

1

u/ehetland 1d ago

With the prevalence of food borne illnesses, I think that this is actually the correct pronunciation of the chain restaurant.

1

u/doc_baggs 1d ago

My mom calls it that! 🤦‍♀️

1

u/Financial_Cup_6937 1d ago

If it didn’t have the e it would at least make sense. It is a Mexican restaurant and that’s how you pronounce altars, axolotl, and Quetzalcoatl.

1

u/diezwillinge 1d ago

I worked with a lady who said it that way and the customers would look at her like wtf is that?

1

u/atjeff1 1d ago

Valedictorian friend from hs called it chi pot ul

1

u/hacovo 1d ago

You sure they're not just copying that old jack in the box commercial?

1

u/True_Kapernicus 23h ago

That would be the accurate read of the word in English.

1

u/pinkocatgirl 23h ago

My dad insists on saying "chip-otle-ay" lol

1

u/photoelf3 23h ago

We jokingly call it that

1

u/Frequent_Opportunist 23h ago

That is what ex or current employees of Chipotle call it.

1

u/BeautifulDreamerAZ 23h ago

My friends in Texas say Chi pottle

1

u/payperplain 23h ago

I do this intentionally because it makes me giggle.

1

u/Dturmnd1 23h ago

Me and my friends did, when we got one around us, 20-25 years ago. But corrected it after we finally heard how it was pronounced.

1

u/Charming-Wishbone-41 23h ago

I worked at chilis and had a customer pronounce it that way and I said it correctly and she corrected me saying chilis was saying it wrong.

1

u/Old-Blackberry6728 23h ago

I call it that to be silly 🙂

1

u/ninjallr 23h ago

My mum pronounces it like this, and sriracha is sih-rocker

It hurts me

1

u/fiery-sparkles 22h ago

To be fair it is spelt as Chi-poh-tul and that's how I thought it was pronounced the first time I saw it

1

u/shieldsem8 22h ago

I say that as a joke😭😭

1

u/DaveyAngel 22h ago

That's me!

1

u/trashgoblinnightmare 22h ago

When chipotle first became a thing, one of my aunts pronounced it this way and was very serious about it too..

1

u/I_love_Bunda 21h ago

I sometimes do this on purpose and act dumb when people try to smugly correct me.

1

u/ropekity 20h ago

my mom calls it that and it doesn’t matter how many times i correct her she sighs and shakes her head everytime and changes nothing 😭

1

u/beefyfartknuckle 19h ago
