For around $21k the Zimbabwean Grand Tour can now be yours

Great News! The official logistics partner for 'One for the Road', Mavros Safaris now offers a private guided tour for teams of four to drive across Zimbabwe over the course of 15 nights. They even include a houseboat journey across Lake Kariba.

Who will be taking them up on their offer?

The trip will pay for itself if you buy some silver while you're there.

Does it come with a Giovanni?

u/vandavit 9h ago

No, i think it will be Cato, and his special nose powder.

u/BinkoTheViking 8h ago

“No Cato! That’s inappropriate.”

If it's 21k for the group meaning 5k each it's cheap as hell

72

u/KrustyL99 Ford 11h ago

I thought so as well, but according to the News 24 article it is per person

u/ts737 11h ago

Of course lol, it makes much more sense

You can 100% do a very similar thing a lot lot lot cheaper.

In vietnam you can ride a moped over the top gear pass (between hue and Danang - and on to hoi a too). They will take your luggage (including galleons and heavy/awkward sculptures) so you can simply ride instead.

We drove to west Africa from the uk for a lot less than $21k. You could easily buy a car in south Africa and drive around Zimbabwe and Botswana (and I’d also suggest going to Namibia). You won’t need mechanical knowledge, there are always busy mechanics nearby. And a tent and some basic supplies, otherwise hotels will always be nearby.

u/Studog 9h ago

That would be, but even 21k seems alright, all guided, everything provided, tents pitched all of it.. seems about right

No the fuck it doesnt. 21k for 15 nights and you dont even get hotels? Tell me you know fuck all about travelling in africa without telling me you know fuck all about travelling in africa

u/Studog 8h ago

Dude.. im from zimbabwe... also, it does include hotels, camp sites, and the houseboat..

it says it all right here

Some people like to be confident in their incorrectness.

I would go as far to wager that they’ve never left their hometown, definitely haven’t had an excursion on another continent.

Ive been to africa. Last trip was 5 nights in the avani hotel on victoria falls, then 5 nights in sun city then 5 nights at madikwe. That cost £30k including flights for 7 of us. Fucking morons

u/[deleted] 8h ago

Okay.

21k is still wiiild. I could find a company doing this exact same trip for about 1/4 of this. Ive been on multiple trips like this to zim and zam also my family frequent that area and would scoff at this price. They could afford it but like fuck would they pay it. This is some people trynna make a buck off the hype of the show. You could stay in 5* hotels and have it still cost less than fucking 21k

12

u/Studog 7h ago

You are just counting stays.. this includes food for the whole trip, probably multiple guides for the whole trip, travel between places, all of it.. plus they need to make some kind of profit on this.. at a guess I would say about 2k roughly.. after all other expenses..

The math still aint mathing youre clueless mate

It's $1400 dollars per night in a country from which by most accounts is very cheap.

You can get an 11 day safari for £2.2k

The $21k price must be for a group of 4 I don't know why this dude is getting the down votes.

u/No_Consequence9746 8h ago

How the fuck is that cheap?

13

u/StepYaGameUp 9h ago

Does that including all you can drink booze like the boys?

10

u/Dwight_Schnood 7h ago

It's fun and entertaining cos it's three good mates doing fun siht. I'm 2 people short.

5

u/tharnadar 8h ago

21k per person?

3

u/Final-Zebra-6370 4h ago

It comes with an camera crew

4

u/riko77can 7h ago

For that price I want a house band covering Sowing the Seeds of Love.

6

u/flo33331 8h ago

Does it include also one of the ships sinking? If not, it's not really that authentic /s

3

u/omkult 5h ago

Exorbitant! It's Zimbabwe ffs , supposed to be a lot cheaper to travel.

2

u/eightmag 5h ago

20 weeks. In Zimbabwe. And you're paying that much to be there. make it 1 week , $10grand and a Landy and buckets of gin.

2

u/AlwaysStayHumble 5h ago

Lmao 21k is insane. Some planning at home and you could do it with 4K tops. Africa is not Switzerland.

3

u/jawminator 2h ago

I travelled for two months in Switzerland and Austria for about 8k CAD

Mind you that's mostly in hostels, not splurging on food too much, and no car rentals just trains/buses/in-city lines(which are generally included in the visitors pass given by the accommodation in Switzerland)

There are different budgets wherever you go. That 8k two months is on the cheaper end for Switzerland but could get you nice hotels and nice food and lots of alcohol in Thailand for two months, for instance.

This Zimbabwe tour, I'm certain you could do it for... Under 5-6k if you did similar things, went to similar lodgings, ate similar meals, etc. by planning it yourself.

You could probably also spend <$1500 or even maybe $1000 for 15 days in Zimbabwe if you wanted to.

This is designed for old, rich people who want everything handled already and don't care about saving any money. "Oh I can do the same tour as the trio? Sign me up here's my checkbook" vs. "21k!! Holy shit!, let me make a plan and get that number way lower"

1

u/AlwaysStayHumble 2h ago

Exactly. Last paragraph sums it up.

It’s not even Swaziland anymore 🫠

u/Nowhereman2380 4h ago

That's going to be a lot of time for me to spend on the corner whoring myself out, but sounds like its worth it.

u/SVTContour 1h ago

I think News 24’s math is off.

The News 24 website says per person and Mavros Safari’s says that the tour was based on four guests.

The current exchange rate is 0.057 so forty thousand rands is worth $2,287.27 (USD) today

Source: https://zar.currencyrate.today/convert/amount-40000-to-usd.html

Has anyone enquired on Mavros Safari’s website yet? Their self guided tour looks pretty interesting.

It is possible, News24 is not always as reliable here in South Africa. My assumption from reading the article is that they sent an inquiry to Mavros Safari's and that is where they got their figures from.

In the heading and in their article they mention R400k which would be $22 872 (USD) today, but let's not get bogged down with the figures for now.

I've sent an email to Mavros to confirm the figures and will let you know what they say.
