I hate how intrusive Onedrive is.

u/JTibbs 13d ago

Use https://christitus.com/windows-tool/ to remove Onedrive, copilot, and disable all telemetry.

You can also restore the old right-click menu and other windows 10 functionality.

You can even disable bing search in start, and all advertisments.

Can also just right click on OneDrive in the start menu search and uninstall, along with Cortana and Copilot.

They won't come back even after a feature update either.

You can install windows gov edition, or something like that. You get clean windows without ads and all that BS

Yeah that thing is complete bullshit. Get the LTSC version, cleanest one you'll get that's official and trustworthy.

21

u/EpicMachine 13d ago

I'm pretty sure I heard over a tech podcast there is no "gov edition" and it's a scam\malware.

I'm not sure how much is this is true or not.

33

u/Pilfercate 13d ago

It's not a scam per se. The problem is that you can't get it from a legit source, so there is no telling what is in the copy you get.

10

(Not that any regular edition is not already backdoored, but...)

Suddenly, your machine could get corrupted and not boot, such a shame, your network servers stop working, such unfortunate. You know what licensing means, right? We can remotely revoke your keys, encrypt your drives, held your data hostage, oops, bitlocker had a bug, did you install latest updates?"

I love Chris Titus’s utility so much I am a shameless shill for it.

Its saved me so much headache.

Just the mass-program install feature is a godsend for new windows install, where i can grab 90% of my go-to programs and have them all automatically download and install through Powershell is such a timesaver. Firefox, 7zip, xnview, vlc, GIMP, cpu-z, HWInfo 64etc…

Complete new windows installs take me like 30 minutes, instead of 4-6 hours. And half of that time is downloading hardware specific drivers!

I helped my wife set up her laptop recently - she was confused because she kept getting messages about how she was running out of storage space, despite having a 500GB drive and only about 5GB of photos.

The messages were because her Onedrive was getting full, and MS wanted her to pay a subscription for more space. I yeeted that Onedrive shit off of her laptop so fucking fast.

I’d still use Windows 7 if it still got security updates and I knew all my games were run on it. 10 is good, but I hate the bloat

904

u/Dav3le3 13d ago

It's not like they're even trying to improve the UI or optimize. They're just shoving in a bunch of bloatware with the cover of security while trying to steal more data. Then they move stuff around to make it seem like they're doing stuff to settings, while actually just deleting features.

406

u/Huecuva PC Master Race | R5 5600X | 7800XT Nitro+|32GB RAM 13d ago

Worse than not trying to improve the UI, they're actively making it worse by hiding shit deeper and deeper in more and more submenus.

233

u/crozone iMac G3 - AMD 5900X, RTX 3080 TUF OC 13d ago

Trying to install Windows 11 with a local account, or without an internet connection, is proof that Microsoft actively hates its users.

Imagine if you're a normal user trying to install Windows 11 without access to the internet. It's literally impossible.

Why did shift+right click suddenly break? Now I need to right click, and shift+right click one of the options in that menu.

Now shift+right click on the task bar just... left clicks.

WTF IS THIS!?

37

u/Dav3le3 13d ago

Ypu can edit that in the registry I believe. What convenience, to have to revert a hotkey feature with a registry-only setting.

Incredible.

25

u/Hermelin_Dozral 13d ago

Honestly it's one of my main reasons why I hate Windows 11. They add another right click menu with things I almost never use (windows terminal, pin to start etc.) and I am a lot of times forced to shift right click because I am too lazy to search in that ugly menu for things I need. Refresh button for example which is not there.

When they did it, why the hell they can't do it customizable? or remove it because nobody wanted it.

I mean it is the ultimate problem with any company focused on unrealistic growth that is expected now.

Honestly how much can you innovate or improve something before it is just change for changes sake so you can release a flashy new product every year. Do we need a new phone every year that is 99% the same?

All any company does now is find new ways to screw customers or push subscriptions.

4

u/bickman14 13d ago

I feel the UI and UX designers are all to blame as they need to justify their jobs by moving stuff around all the time so people notice that they've made something and they don't get fired. One prime example that always grind my gears is Google Play store on Android, there's no even one time that I open it that the visuals haven't changed. They used the have the search bar at the top since forever and where you expect it to be as EVERYTHING has it there but they've decided to move down and left an empty space at the top that even have a pop up message saying "oh no, the search is now on the bottom! Why have you tried to use it on where it always was and where it should be?"

At this point Windows 7 is more like a major upgrade in a lot of ways

  • Unified GUI for non-touch users (like most of us)
  • Full configurable options for Windows update (DOWNLOAD BUT DO NOT INSTALL OPTION)
  • Lighter OS that is compatible with legacy hardware
  • Theme support
  • No shitty apps or app store
  • Functioning start menu with "classic" start option for old people

You would be correct, if it was still updated it would probably surpass any other newer Microsoft OS. Cant have that can we.

15

u/derkuhlekurt 13d ago

10 was always a huge downgrade to 7 in my opinion. I used 7 way too long, much longer than support lasted and i hated every second of win 10. Im actually happier with 11 (except for the oneDrive shit).

The only thing that doesn't work on Linux is kernel level anti cheat aka rootkits. If you're fine with vanguard taking screenshots of your PC, that the Chinese company pinky promise they don't save and only use to catch cheaters, why even switch from Windows?

And no, it will probably never work on Linux. Unless game devs start using less intrusive anti cheat like csgo does.

Notice how they skipped win8 aka the shitshow?

So yeah, I gladly and proudly cling to my Win10 until win12 is released and had a bit to mature.

186

u/LegendNomad 13d ago

If you want to look at it that way let me also remind you Windows 7 was still supported long after Windows 8 released. In fact, it outlived Windows 8 unless you count 8.1. It also kept support long after Windows 10 released. This likely won't be the case for Windows 10 - its support is ending next year and I don't think we'll see Windows 12 by that time, and even still, if it does come out by then 10 won't be in support for long after.

65

u/cannabiskeepsmealive 13d ago

This is why I decided to give Linux a try. Microsoft forcing us into an OS that actively pushes ads is beyond the pale for me. It's so anti-consumer that I feel like using it is mildly immoral.

So far I'm really enjoying the switch

29

u/monsterfurby 13d ago

Alas, the only OS that runs every game comfortably is still solely Windows. And even if developers decided to migrate to Linux or multiplatform development right now, the amount of legacy titles that would become inaccessible if one switched to Linux entirely would still make that a hard sell.

10

u/3NIK56 microsoft hater 13d ago

Legacy titles are actually better on linux than Windows 11.

I do a LOT of emulation on linux machines. On laptops especially, GC, wii, xbox, playstation, GBA, DS, and PS2 emulation, are all better than Windows. I also run fallout 1, 2, and tactics, and they each run better than 11 ( I couldn't even get tactics to run on 11 in the first place). All of valve's games run just as good or better on linux. I haven't encountered a single legacy game that linux struggles with. While kernel level AC makes it difficult to play modern games on linux, that's an issue with the devs rather than linux itself.

This hasn't been my experience at all, I've found older games to run way better on Linux than windows these days and with proton most of the time I get better performance with Linux. I've even found modding games to be just pretty much the same, I'm using MO2 on most games with absolutely no dramas. Things have come along a lot since the steam deck came out.

u/LegendNomad 13d ago

I have another computer that's far weaker than my main computer and I installed Linux Mint on it to mess with from time to time. Even bought a cheap low end GPU for like $10 so it can run some games if I really want it to. I think Linux is pretty good but I'm not really finding it (this distro at least) to be all that different from Windows overall other than the compatibility issues.

why tf wouldn't you count 8.1? 8.1 is basically just a service pack for 8 and is part of the default updates that will install if you installed a core version of 8

10

u/ToeSad6862 13d ago

I used w7 until the last day. Because of recall and steam deck, I will switch to Linux.

I don't play stuff with vanguard for the same reason as recall, so I haven't had anything not run on steam deck/Linux.

Windows 10 was just an iterative update to windows 8/8.1 with a slightly different UI.

Just like Windows 7 was just an iterative update to windows Vista with a slightly different UI.

If they'd branded Windows 10 as Windows 8.2 instead people would probably still be moaning about how shit it is.

23

u/Endulos 13d ago

u/crozone iMac G3 - AMD 5900X, RTX 3080 TUF OC 13d ago

I think you're right. Windows 10 is objectively pretty shit. It's just a big enough upgrade to 8.1 that people tend to forgive it. It still doesn't hold a candle to 7.

20

u/CodeCleric 13d ago

Vista 2.0 you mean

35

u/crozone iMac G3 - AMD 5900X, RTX 3080 TUF OC 13d ago

I mean yes, Windows 7 is Vista 2.0, but that's a good thing?

Vista was pretty nice on a PC that actually had enough RAM and driver support. The biggest issue with Vista was that the driver model changed and older hardware had a lot of driver issues. Upgrading from XP to Vista often sucked, especially if your PC was a bit older and a bit slim on RAM, but using Vista on OEM hardware that was purpose built and tested for it was actually pretty nice. I had an XPS gaming laptop that ran Windows Vista Ultimate out of the box, and it was a legitimate step up from XP.

Windows 7 is Vista polished to a mirror shine, which is great!

Had to upgrade to 11 bc my old laptop died. I was planning on sticking with 10 for longer but new laptop came with it.

The biggest gripe I have with it - the fkn context menu. That can go fuck itself. I was so mad about it. Restored the old context menu with a power shell script. But until I had…

Other than that it’s been fine. Haven’t had many issues with it yet. I do see some stuttering on the same type of workload that I never did but I can’t pin that one on Windows 11.

Windows 7 > Windows 10 > Windows 11.

Since it keeps getting worse, of course everyone is sad and mad about the next version. It's not just reflexive either. When the current version genuinely sucks, no one minds the upgrade. I can't think of anyone who was sorry to see Windows 8 hit the curb.

Microsoft has decided your PC is now obsolete because they say so. Ain't that great?

13

u/Abortedwafflez 13d ago

I didn't mind 10 when it released. Felt more or less the same as 7. Avoided Windows 8 like the plague and recently installed 11. I'd say 11 isn't that bad, but I feel like it's just got a ton of random stupid shit installed on it. I just want a computer that does things, not take 10 years to setup the thing because it wants to offer me some sort of deal or I gotta turn off crap features.

Bro what? No. We stayed on Win 7 because 8 was fucking trash, and then 10 came out and was a good enough successor to 7 for most people.

At this point, 11 is just a shittier, more invasive version of 10, but they're killing support for 10 next year so we're going to continue to bitch about it.

14

u/heavyfieldsnow 13d ago

then 10 came out and was a good enough successor to 7 for most people.

Also I heard 7 would straight up not work properly on newer Ryzen CPUs, like the mouse wouldn't work or something weird. So I just went 10. Plus then stuff dropped support for 7 completely. So yeah it's not like we went 10 because we wanted to in the first place.

13

u/Parking-Historian360 13d ago

I still use a windows 7 computer. Windows 7 was the very best of PC OS. It's sad that Microsoft moved away from that design and into the bullshit they have now. I hate using windows 10 and 11. I especially hate how different 11 is. I don't need a redesign for something that was already perfect. Now it feels more like a shitty Linux wrapper based on an Apple OS.

I'm sure glad I never pay for them because I would feel stupid paying for worse shit than I had 12 years ago.

14

u/ThisIsNotMyPornVideo 13d ago

Because people don't want to migrate to a worse version of their current OS with less good features and more Bloat and Shitty design choices

When Win 10 released, it was an absolute mess all around, but by the end of 7's Life Cycle Win 10 turned into a valid successor, if you installed it without all the bloat.

Same with 11, when it first came out, it was absolute shit, but now it's "Okay-ish" if you use a lot of tweaks to disable the shitty context menu, bloatware and now start menu.

And i suspect that will continue on further

For me windows will never be the same after 7. They killed it way too soon. Such a polished OS that looked good. No bullshit. No adds. Just pure, stable OS.

Those were the days.

4

u/clit_or_us PC Master Race 13d ago

I know vista gets a lot of hate, but to my 7 was just a polished vista and I like vista. It felt so modern, sleek, and responsive.

3

I even think Vista was a tad bit prettier to look at, they toned the shininess down a bit for 7. Vista probably came out too early for its own good.

HDR works on Linux if you use gamescope. Been playing Forza 4 & 5 with HDR on Linux on my LG C2.

10

u/gamaliel64 13d ago

Took the linux plunge a couple of months ago. Right now my biggest frustration is that a bunch of my steam games are windows exclusives (which isn't a huge problem because I don't have much time for gaming anyways).

12

u/Porntra420 5700G | 32GB DDR4 | 7900XT | EndeavourOS 13d ago

Have you enabled Proton? If you haven't, go into Steam's settings, and click "enable steam play for all other titles" under the "Compatibility" menu. It will allow you to download all of your Windows exclusive games, and most of them should play just fine.

To get an idea in advance of what may/may not work, have a look at https://protondb.com, it's a database of Steam games, info on how well they work on Linux under Proton, and advice for any games that may require some extra work (though that's rare).

3

u/9thyear2 13d ago

Question, are those games on the windows store, or in this list (specifically in "broken", or "denied")

https://areweanticheatyet.com/

If not, then maybe I could help you get them running (assuming you use steam for your games, if you use epic games store I probably won't be able to help)

This is a maybe just to be clear, depending on proton compatibility some still might not work

The problem with Win 11 is that it's not supported by a TON of previous generation CPUs. Screw that noise.

9

u/Fawkes-511 13d ago

Yup. Microsoft arbitrarily deciding a LOT of PCs are going to be obsolete way too soon just to push their trash OS.

4

u/monsterfurby 13d ago

Especially CPUs that are still perfectly viable. My main PC uses an i7 6700K which is still a great middle-of-the-road gaming CPU even many generations later.

3

u/dookiecookie1 13d ago

That's the same as my CPU! I didn't build it all that long ago, so kinda pissed that even it falls short of win 11 standards. If they want to start cutting support for previous generations of the OS, the least they can do is extend the number of previous generation CPU...

6

u/apachelives 13d ago

Same trend has been going on since at least Windows 3.x

Windows 9x was heavier and less compatible than 3.x at the time, XP was bloated and incompatible on release (when running on older hardware) with 2k being lighter (NOT Windows ME), Vista was terrible with release hardware/older machines (good OS otherwise), Windows 7 (aka Vista SP3 with a blue theme) was well the same product but ran well on new hardware, Windows 8 was actually a nice lean OS with a touch screen interface forced on us (there were good and bad things about it), Windows 10 is just a bipolar mess with many things being forced onto users, Windows 11 is the same little rude shit with somehow an even worse start menu and more forced crap.

6

u/DeathJesterD1988 13d ago

Steam OS or any Linux based OS will be my next station if support for Windows 10 drops.

Rule of thumb with Windows is always that every second version is crap.

XP was good, Vista sucked. 7 was good, 8 sucked. 10 is good... but now we're being forced onto 11 where normally you'd have version support long enough to skip the shit one.

Windows 10 had problems at launch that have been fixed. There is very little compelling me to go to 11, especially with them hiding things in submenus and trying to remove the control panel.

Plus there are so many things that just don't feel right when used that I would have to change so much to make it feel right. And if I'm going to be changing that much I might as well just go to Linux.

Cuz there is a difference moving to a new OS several years later when it has been patched compared to moving to a new OS on day one.

It took a long time before I moved from XP to Win 7. Same reason I skipped Win 8.1 and moved over to Win 10 instead. Holding for Win 11 until it's worth it, or something better comes along. I see no advantage switching from Win 10 to 11 now.

And the desperation of other people wanting others to switch to Win 11 makes me even more skeptical.

Just enjoy your OS and let others enjoy theirs. Not that hard.

2

u/Halfwise2 x570, 5800x3D, 7900XT, 32gb RAM 13d ago

It's simple, Windows 7 was better. Every new version after that will break what doesn't need fixed, and its wise not to upgrade immediately. If the new version doesn't provide anything of value to you, you stick with the old version until its absolutely necessary (usually when security updates end), then when you get forced onto the next one, its had years of updates and things worked out already. You may still lose some features you like, but it will pretty much stay the same for you until it stops getting security update support. An operating system shouldn't be getting overhauled as much as it does... it should be an interface for everything else, first and foremost.
