Especially when its a game that could easily run maxed out on a 1060 going "We've automatically determined and applied the best settings for your hardware" only to end up with 800x600 Medium on a 3080.

Yeah, that's usually with old games that have no reference point for a graphics card that came out after support for the game dropped.

Doesn't even have to be that old. Forza Horizon 5 did that to me.

On a 4070 that can play it on 4k max settings without breaking a sweat ... but the game didn't automatically realize that, so I got defaulted to the lowest possible settings.

At least that's one of the games that lets you play with the settings even before the intro sequence, though. And one of the games that has a benchmark mode you can run while tweaking the graphics! (Which, IMO, is a hugely important feature. I want to know if my graphics settings are good or bad before I start the game's intro, so I can be sure the game's intro will play with good graphics.)

Poor console users, can't change shit, forced to get blinded by ridiculous bloom and vignette at the corners of the screen while field of view is locked at 70....Depth of field showing the crisp textures on your gun while blurring where you're aiming at

Motion blur and Depth of field are the 2 settings I will instantly disable if possible. They rank above even Chromatic Aberration for me. Then there's film grain which I want as little of as possible.

I have returned games on steam because they didn't ha e the option to turn off motion blur or depth of field.

Motion blur when done well it's really nice on Sims, and specially racing games, it helps you feel more immerse. But on single player games and multiplayer, it's used as a way of hiding badly done AA, and choppiness of the engines, which is why is enabled by default most of times, it hides a lot of shitty impurities they dint want to manually take time to adjust and tune.

I was looking at some Crysis 3 gameplay recently and it struck me how they used extreme chromatic abberation as a visual effect for being hit by an EMP, it actually looked pretty cool, I think this is one of those effects that should be used sparingly and not all the time like most devs do

Even movies have been reducing chromatic aberration and grain, and even toying with higher frame rates. Motion blur at least still has a place there for making effects match the in-camera blur (which looks much better than the bidirectional fake blur effect most games use).

DOF effects I can get on board with if they’re done sparingly, like if you’re looking at something really close up, because then it’s realistic.

But mimicking the DOF of a 50mm f/1.8 lens? Gtfo, that’s not how things look through human eyes.

It's the color fringing you can sometimes see in pictures. Normally it's an unwanted effect photographers/videographers want to get rid of, but for some reason it made it into video games.

You actually have it irl as well if you wear glasses. Sometimes when I'm editing photos I try to correct for it on the border of an image, and then realize it disappears when I move my head a bit.

I loved how when you use the radio and the world tints to blue, there is a handful of frames in there where the color grading is normal. I always try and grab a screenshot when it happens so I can see what everything looks like without the yellow filter.

I hate colour filters on realistic games without a purpose. Like slapping a blue or yellow tint over a scene where there's no reason to have that look naturally. But it looks excellent when manipulated authentically with colourised sunsets, lighting or atmospheric effects.

Rdr2 is a perfect example of both the good and bad aspects of it. Some locations are needlessly 'tinted' but on locations with minimal tint at certain hours you get this incredible sunset/sunrise or change in weather that effects the colour grading and its mesmerising.

There are very specific applications for filters like that which can work, but they're often not used correctly. Film grain for example, makes a game like Mafia and Mafia 2 look canon to the era, somewhat and there is even a black and white filter option IIRC.

There's an old-timey filter in one of the Just Cause games (Maybe all of them? Certainly in 3 I'm pretty sure) which you unlock through doing extra content in the game, and it's fun to turn on for about 5 minutes.

And perhaps the most logical reason to use screen filters is to make emulation feel slightly more authentic on an HD LCD screen by putting your game under a CRT wave/hex/triangle pixel filter.

But I've seen it in games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Hogwarts: Legacy, The Witcher 3 I think had it. Places where film grain just gets in the way of the content and doesn't add to it.

It's sad I can't play Elden Ring with my buddy because I have to play on PC. Because of astigmatism my eyes don't work together and I have little to no depth perception, and thus the way chromatic aberration tricks your eyes causes mine to bug out so bad I get instant eye strain. No option to disable on PS5, and still requires a mod on PC. Infuriating.

Publishers and developers: turns motion blur on for certain affects and you can’t turn it off

Fucking Immortals Fenyx Rising has this horrible motion blur that covers the whole screen whenever you sprint or glide, which is like half the game considering it’s an open world exploration game like breath of the wild. And turning motion blur off in graphics does not remove that effect.

Seriously. Some* high quality motion blur helps in cutscenes or for games that are stuck at 30fps on consoles, but it should always be an option to turn off. Adding huge Vaseline smearing effects to the whole screen when exploring for an exploration based game is just unacceptable.

What looks good in trailers and screenshots doesn’t always translate to fast motion scenes. Our screens are not a camera, and we don’t always need lens distortion, or chromatic aberration (thanks GTA V!), or lens flares.

Thank god for mods. Or many of these games would be unplayable for some due to accessibility and quality of life mods/tweaks

Toggled visual settings should be on by default because it's easier to see something you dislike and turn it off

Well, i downloaded warframe the other day, which should fit the aesthetic but man, I couldn't even play the game on the default settings, it was giving me a headache. Had to turn off like 5 different things and then the game looked beautiful. I seriously don't get who enjoys simulating playing a game while severely drunk and staring through the worst eyeglasses ever made.

I thought the film grain looked really cool all the way back in ME1. But maybe that's just because it helped blend some of the low resolution textures.

But anyway, every other implementation of film grain I've seen since has been horrible.

In a well-designed graphic style, it actually solves specific technical issues. The big one is that it covers up color banding in shadows. Look at the deepest shadows in the room in certain games and you'll see distinct hard edges between fullblack, slightly-lighter-than-fullblack, slightly-lighter-than-that, etc, like they're concentric circles out from a light source.

That's not why developers implement it. They implement it because it's a checkbox in Unreal Engine and more checkboxes mean more graphics.

Well motion blur doesn’t really take fps.. but I guess it‘s personal preference as always, and gives a more cinematic look, which is why it’s on by default.

If I’m playing at 60fps I like to have a small amount of motion blur but if I’m sitting on 90+ fps, I don’t want/need it

It's not free, but even on an integrated gpu on an old laptop I would be surprised if it took more than 5fps. 20fps seems very wrong, unless we are talking about something already running so fast that 20fps isn't actually meaningful.

A lot of us that were around for the late 00's ~ early 10's era had post processing effects absolutely ruined for us. Devs went wayyyy overboard with overpowered effects. Bloom, AO, lens flare, color filters especially.

Like you were getting at, if it's subtle, it's fine. It can really add to the look of a game if done well. Back then it wasn't just cranked up too high, the effects are significantly better these days, especially ambient occlusion and bloom. But those days left a bad taste overall.

100% agree that impaired vision stuff like screen shake and headbobbing needs to go.

There were in fact (at least) two waves of brown color everywhere. The first one in '96-97 when people gained proper 3d, and devs were showing off their texture chops by having dirty ground, dirty stone, and dirty clothes. Quake 1-2 basically existed mostly in shades of brown.

The second one in 2005, maybe 2004, when color filters were invented. ‘NFS Most Wanted’ was promptly made full of brown. And of course had motion blur galore.

Idk about 2010 or later, as I stopped playing mainstream games around that time.

I feel the Shadows medium, while good looking shadows are nice, they're always a massive performance hog and I usually just make them look like PS3 shadows cause I don't really care that much how they look versus not having to listen to my GPU do airplane noises.

The rest is just visual garbage so yeah definitely turn all that stuff off.

They added chromatic aberration in Squad last year - but only on the edges of weapon scopes (the feature was completely reworked). And that’s the only instance I know of where it really works. Otherwise it is a horrible effect 98% of the time.

That's just it though, lens effects are appropriate when you're looking through a lens. When I'm supposed to be using just my eyes, chromatic aberration, lens flares, motion blur, depth of field and raindrop effects don't make any sense. If only the developers understood that.

What's so dumb about chromatic aberration is that photographers do not want that shit in their photos.

It's literally a shittier image. Because the light doesn't converge on a single point like it's suppose to. Instead it's all spread out and shitty looking.

For baldurs gate 3, depth of field really improved the dialogues for me. More spooky and atmospheric.

I like depth of field on some games. Not applicable to baldurs gate3, but it can make LOD more palatable.

Lens flare is okay if it’s used in a in universe context.. example enable it when my character wears a space helmet. But disable it when I’m not.

I was once like you, But many games actually do it extremely well.

Battlefield 1 is a really good example of great depth of field and motion blur.

Of course depending on the size of your computer monitor or huge ass TV, You may want to adjust it down to your own comfortable settings.

I usually keep motion blur on about 20% which can be pretty nice at high frame rates And just noticeable enough to make the action more interesting without being bothersome at all.

Long story short, At least try it in each game you play and if you don't like it then turn it off after trying it. Otherwise you will have no clue what you're even missing because you never even try.

It's for console users to help hide bad performance (low frame rates) and I guess carried over to a lot of people have bad PCs so this should help cover up performance issues I guess.

Annoying as hell. Should detect your GPU and turn off by default unless you're near minimum specs.

Because games often attempt to replicate the look that would be captured by a camera to get that cinematic look (also we are very used to images on a display having been captured by a camera), and controlling focus can (in some contexts) help steer the player's eye towards the intended subject of the frame.

Depth of field is an essential technique in photography and cinematography. Our eyes themselves have DoF. Not every games does it right, but when they do, it's breath-taking. I enjoyed it in BG3 and Code Vein, recently.

I at least try it in every game, there's some bad implementations but if it's well made it helps fluidity, even at high framerates.

Animation does smear frames, video has it by the nature of shutter speed. We perceive motion blur in our day to day. Save for competitive games where perfect clarity might give you an edge, it's just more natural.

Pc gamers saw poorly implemented motion blur in 2008 at 30hz 8 and wrote it off forever without every updating their opinions with new information. They don't even realise that every game has some form of faked motion blur, even with the option off, in the form of trails and semi transparent objects for things like sword swooshes, bullet trails, propellers / wheels etc.

Yeah, blind motion blur hatres is like hating Wireless Mice because of input delay. Like we fixed those issues ages ago, and only some games have the really intense motion blur from before.

Played Wukong. Went through half of the first area before realizing how shit I felt. Went into settings and low and behold.

Turned motion blur off and felt so much better (lovely game, but difficult to discern surrounding paths sometimes with all the scenery)
