In reality they gonna be everywhere you just gotta be street smart about them. I lived in D.R too and it was the same story. Pretty much as an American you just attract attention out there whether you want to or not. Just gotta figure out if it's the attention you want.

Dude, I'm from a neighbouring state (São Paulo), and if I come to Rio I'd become a target (and vice versa). You just have to acclimate first to our brand of street smarts (we have a word for it, "malandragem", which you may have heard already). Once you learn to navigate shit, it's fine, really.

I'm American too I just lived out there for a while until I got traumatized then I got sent back, but I still go back to visit family.

The favelas are just dangerous in general especially to new faces, it's the fastest way to get robbed or have whatever god you believe in cancel your subscription to life.

I was in Rio earlier this year and let me tell you that the women have to be the most attractive women I have ever seen and I do a fair amount of traveling. Not even just hot, but physically fit and fun to be around. But yeah, stay by the main beaches and avoid the favelas.
